Can r/smashbros stand behind r/ProCSS in keeping CSS as part of Reddit?

Posted: 25 Apr 2017 02:12 PM PDT

Last week, the Reddit blog announced that with the website redesign would come an elimination of the CSS system currently in place with subreddits. The blog post details why the admins think this is a good idea.

Many redditors, however, are opposed to this idea. Since the blog post indicates that this switch would not be immediate, many users and subreddits have officially backed r/ProCSS in retaining Reddit's current system of subreddit CSS editing. I think that r/smashbros should join this coalition because CSS is a huge part of this subreddit. We had a complete redesign last year, and the sidebar and top banner are constructed with great care to help both newcomers and veterans alike. Not only that, but the flair and search options in place allow users to greater navigate the subreddit. Reddit's new update would eliminate all of this in favor of a greater homogenization of the Reddit ecosystem.

In short, removing CSS would take away a lot of what makes this subreddit unique. We should band together in opposition to this proposed change, and I'm asking the users of the subreddit and the moderators to at least consider what these changes could mean for the subreddit, then make a decision to either back or not back the status quo of CSS editing.

/r/smashbros randomly spouting Melee meme?

Posted: 25 Apr 2017 04:13 AM PDT

I was just putting some numbers into excel here at work and listening to music, when I randomly heard a robotic voice reciting this melee meme:

I am very mad. I drove all the way to CSU to play in a tournament, get stuck in traffic and lost against this retarded ass sheik. Down threw tech chase and wouldn't stop shino stalling I really cannot think straight right now. I offered to MM him for more than $20...

I have no idea where it came from, though the only source I could think of was an r/smashbros page I had open. Is this a thing that the mods put into the css?

I updated Anticipation, my spoiler blocking extension to support vods.co in addition to YouTube and Twitch so you can now watch VODs completely spoiler free, from searching for a tournament to watching the VODs

Posted: 25 Apr 2017 04:19 PM PDT

tl;dr: Watch tournament VODs completely spoiler-free by installing Anticipation (Chrome/Firefox) and using it at https://vods.co/ like this.

Anticipation is a browser extension I made a while back for this subreddit that hides when a YouTube/Twitch VOD ends so you don't know who wins. vods.co is a website made by /u/Urzy that hides who plays in what round of bracket so you don't know who advances. Before, Anticipation only worked with YouTube and Twitch, which users seemed happy with. However, after looking at how /r/LoLeventVoDs handles things, I realized that we could get the exact same experience if we combined vods.co and Anticipation.

Now, you can follow a past tournament completely spoiler free.

Anticipation and vods.co still work independently of each other, so if you only want one's functionality you can have that as well.

The install link is here - Chrome/Firefox - definitely try out Anticipation and vods.co together, since it seems like a lot of you enjoy watching tournaments without spoilers. Here's an example of them working together: http://imgur.com/a/IjgXL

Note to developers/people who want to learn:

Anticipation is also open-source and probably one of the easiest Smash-related projects to contribute to. If anyone wants to make improvements to the UI or overall Anticipation experience and wants to learn/has experience with JavaScript, I highly recommend that you make your changes and open up a pull request. The code should be fairly easy to read once you get familiar with JavaScript.

For people who are super knowledgable about JavaScript/browser extensions (not me), feel free to make improvements wherever you feel are necessary (especially code style/practices). The Safari version is currently deprecated due to matters out of my control, but if anyone wants to bring it up to date, I'll accept your pull request and start monitoring that repo. I'll be actively monitoring both the Chrome and Firefox repositories from now on.

Lastly, shoutouts to /u/Urzy for your work on vods.co :)

Struggling autistic man looking for help

Posted: 25 Apr 2017 10:41 AM PDT

So this is going to be another depressing sob story.

I love this game. i love how it takes video game characters i genuinely care about and puts them in a competitive fighting game. Recently, i started playing Smash 4 competitively, and have been going to tournaments. But after playing for a while, i have started to become frustrated and really depressed.

I mainly play Lucario, cause i think he's a really cool Pokemon. After learning more techniques by going to tournaments and making friends i have started to love the game. But after a while, i have started to show no signs of improvement at the game, and am starting to lose more than i win. I get bodied both online and at these tournaments more than usual, and i see my friends who have just started playing competitively starting to surpass me in skill level.

Here's a little bit about me. I am 21, i go to school and work part time. I am diagnosed with severe depression and anxiety, and i have autism... Yea im a huge mess. I dont know if these mental illnesses play a role in why i am not improving, and i wonder if i should even bother

Recently, people tell me the mistakes i make when playing. But i have serious trouble fixing them, and some of the people trying to help me think im autopiloting, even though im trying to focus and think about what i am doing. This seems to be the case with any competitive game i play, and i end up quitting.

If i really am autopiloting, idk if i should continue. I have made a small group of friends by going to a weekly local tournament. they are my only friends, and i had barely any friends before i started playing competitively. There are a lot of good things that this game has brought to me, but it is also my main source of frustration and depression lately. So i dont know what to do. I am looking for help, and i really hope someone on this sub reddit can help me out.

Slippi Stats Extraction ~ Kill Stats @ Rivalries by Yahoo Esports

Posted: 25 Apr 2017 12:22 PM PDT

If you remember a while back /u/Fizzi36 made 2 posts called Slippi Stats for the People(1 2). Basically, the posts explain how to access the in-game data that was collected at Summit and Rivalries.

So...

I wrote a script that downloads all of the sets in a tournament and then extracts info about every kill.

This is what some of the output looks like:

SFAT(Fox) killed The Moon(Marth) at %109.23 with Usmash on Fountain of Dreams Wizzrobe(Captain Falcon) killed Duck(Samus) at %116.37 with Fsmash on Fountain of Dreams

Link to the full Rivalries Kills Output

So there are 7 variables it follows: 2 players, 2 characters, 1 percentage, 1 move, and 1 stage.

Any combination of these 7 variables can be viewed. Here are some examples stuff we can calculate using kills:

Average death percent per stage:

 Battlefield: 114% Pokemon Stadium: 126% Yoshi's Story: 113% Final Destination: 116% Dreamland: 135% Fountain of Dreams: 121%

Favorite kill move per player:

Hungrybox: Fair SFAT: Bair S2J: Fair Westballz: Bair Duck: Fsmash The Moon: Fsmash Lucky: Bair ChuDat: Dthrow Shroomed: Fair PewPewU: Fsmash Druggedfox: Bair Wizzrobe: Fair Axe: Usmash Mew2King: Bair Mang0: Dair Swedish Delight: Fair

Average kill percentage per move for: Fox

 Fthrow: 81% Bair: 127% Ftilt: 99% Uthrow: 60% Utilt: 94% Nair: 119% Uair: 118% Dair: 61% Uspecial: 62% Nspecial: 131% Dsmash: 100% Fsmash: 122% Usmash: 119% Dtilt: 134% Dspecial: 86%

SO NOW WHAT?

Basically, anything that was recorded in Slippi Stats is now available to be manipulated in Python, stocks, recoveries, punishes, and everything else. If you want to hop on and extract some stats the GitHub is at the bottom of this post. Like maybe win percentages per stage by a specific character or something. There's a lot of possible things. If you don't want to do something like that then just comment below if you want to see a specific stat and I'll figure out if it's doable and do it and make another post about it or if it's simple and small I'll try to reply to your comment with those statistics or send you a pm.

Sorry for such a long post.

Legitimacy of "choosing a character based on your playstyle"

Posted: 25 Apr 2017 08:36 AM PDT

As the title says. Some people say that you should find a character suited to your playstyle, as though your playstyle is kind of like a natural instinct. In Melee, for example, it's like how Mew2King says he knows Fox is a better character than Sheik/Marth, but he doesn't think he is a technical enough person to main Fox (surprisingly). In Smash 4, where there are dozens of characters, how some people might be switching between mains over and over to 'find their playstyle.'

Do you think that you can just find the best character in the game and naturally learn the playstyle they require, if you spend enough time with that character, to where it becomes instinctive to you? How legitimate do you think the 'I don't synergize with this character' goes?
