Good morning /r/PokemonGO,

Another day down. Hopefully you all had a great Monday.

This megathread is for any stories you would like to share from real life experiences while playing Pokemon GO.

These stories and experiences are still allowed to be posted to the subreddit any day of the week, but now there's a thread too! Use this for any of your small stories and experiences that didn't really justify a full post.

When you are at concert but Pokémon Go is life

Posted: 30 Jan 2017 09:38 AM PST

With each migration team rocket should take each gym and place their own Pokemons.

Posted: 30 Jan 2017 07:18 AM PST

This way we would get shifting meta and would lose stagnant lvl 10 gyms and even lower lvl traines got the chance to fight in gyms (assuming team rocket's Pokemons were starting at lvl 5 and going up to 20-25.)

[Discussion]The distance required to receive one candy from your buddy is excessive. Change from 5/3/1 to 3/2/1.

Posted: 30 Jan 2017 01:43 PM PST

I know i am going to get the "Just get up and walk fat ass!", but hear me out. To power up my Snorlax just one level I need to walk 100KM. Those mons that require 5KM should be reduced to 3KM and those that require 3KM should be reduced to 2KM. 1KM should probably just stay the same. I don't know why others don't bring this issue up. Is everybody doing slow drives or something?

EDIT- Any other ideas?

EDIT 2- Edited for clarity.

Edit 3- Removed inappropriate comparison.

Edit 4- For those wondering. I compared walking my Snorlax for a one level gain to my Grandfathers experience in the Bataan Death March. It is the same distance.

Pokemon GO Easter Eggs

Posted: 30 Jan 2017 06:11 AM PST

Its been so long since CEO of Niantic, John Hanke told us to "keep spinning!" and that there are a lot of hidden easter eggs inside the game. And nobody has figured it out since then. I really wonder what could they be.

[Discussion] Playing PoGo the rural way

Posted: 30 Jan 2017 08:14 AM PST

Out of the original group of people I played this game with, I was the last to start playing (3 weeks after launch) but the only one left playing. 2 of my friends who grew up huge Pokemon fans have quit because of the speedlock - coincidentally both of them exercise and frequently jog but quit because there are no pokestops near them so they essentially were forced to buy balls or just quit.

Me? I don't jog and between my wife and I both working full-time on opposite shifts, with 3 young kids there is really no time or chance to get out and GO now that winter is upon us in the North. Luckily for me, I can collect balls because I drop my kids off at Daycare twice a week in a relatively large town, Stroudsburg, PA and it has a LOT of pokestops. After I drop the kids off I can go through town and hit about 30 stops on my way to work - driving slow and hitting the traffic lights makes this easy; I will cash in on about 95% of the stops. Still though, these once or twice a week passes only give me a small stash of goods, so I have to conserve.

I rarely get the 7 day pokestop bonus because 1 day a week I stay home - the nearest pokestop is 8 miles away from my house. I can easily get the daily catch bonus at home.

After spending a few weeks in Philadelphia I really got the feel for the game the developers have -

*get an unlimited amount of items since Pokestops are everywhere - rural playing means I conserve everything, you don't haphazardly throw balls at Mons.

*catch everything because you can in the city, stuff is everywhere and your inventory is always full - in rural areas each ball is a precious commodity and unless you are purposely trying to evolve something or need it, you pass on 90% of what you see

*You throw great balls willy nilly because you get tired of things breaking out - in rural areas you conserve your great balls for those special encounters

*you find yourself throwing Ultra balls at harder to catch things because you have a hundred of them and your bag is overloaded - in the country you only use ultra balls for dex absences and those occasional RARE encounters

*the mon diversity is incredible in Urban areas, my god you can go from biome to biome block to block - in rural Murica you get a hard on if you see a Magikarp or machop. Lord knows Dratini are legends and Lapras are a myth.

*Egg hatching is glorious as you never stop going in cities; there are stops everywhere and it pushes you to walk "one more block" - In the rural environment the game is very dull. Do I need another Ratata? Maybe it is a Ditto...probably not.

*Your screen is constantly LOADED with MONS in the city - In rural areas you literally have to walk multiple km's to have another paras pop up that you are going to ignore.

*I see lures being used in the cities - Lures are pointless in rural places. it's not like I have a reason to sit for 30 minutes in a church parking lot.

*Walking is feasible in urban areas as there are sidewalks and reasons to walk towards things - out in the rural places the game design forces you to drive. Stops are MILES apart off roads without sidewalks or berms. Gyms are miles apart as well and it's easier to pull up and sit in your car anyway.

With that being said, the only drawback I see is gyms. But that's a sore issue anyway as there is no depth to it. In my rural gameplay I can usually cash in on 3 gyms a day that occasionally get taken down by the same players over and over...In the city each gym gets slammed back down very quickly.

I for one enjoy the game in the respect it is something fun to do and hits me in that special spot of collecting things. I just wish they would find a way to make the game more playable for rural folks and city folks alike. The game is all about "GO"ing but it literally has chased people away that do GO quite a bit just because of their model. I am glad that I can still enjoy the game but having no one to chat with and share experiences with is slowly killing it for me.

Am I only one that takes naps just to wake up, hopeful that when I check Reddit there will be some update to save my long lasting wait?!

Posted: 30 Jan 2017 05:01 PM PST

I've never been one to complain, and I hope none of you point fingers at me like I'm some traitor to Pokemon Go... we're all on the same side, but if Niantic doesn't want to release Gen 2, the least they can do is feed us with some update that broadens the depth of the game. SO MANY people have come up with astounding ideas at this point that this game HAS the potential to grow, without the release of new Pokemon. If Niantic has trouble figure out what features they want to add to the game, they need look no further... literally they can just scroll through Reddit and find a great idea. My point is, I don't see why waiting for an update at this point doesn't feel like we're really getting the reward we deserve when something finally does drop... Niantic hasn't been doing a great job at keeping us hyped during this very stale period. All I can hope is that they make some adjustments in the future, because I feel like our community's dedication to this game surpasses the lack of consideration we have gotten in return from this team. The force is with you Niantic. Please don't let us down.

PokémonGo in a Hurricane

Posted: 30 Jan 2017 07:39 AM PST

Has anyone else noticed that we all play PokemonGo in a hurricane? When the app is open to the map, the clouds move from left to right, no matter what direction you are facing.

What I'm thinking is that each trainer is in the eye of their own personal swirling hurricane.

Unable to swipe around or interact with Pokémon, Pokestops, Gyms?

Posted: 30 Jan 2017 12:38 PM PST

Anyone else experiencing this? It's been happening to me for months and I don't think this bug has been brought up yet. Basically what happens is my game randomly glitches out meaning I can't swipe to look around on the map or tap any Pokestops, Pokémon, or Gyms until I restart the game. But I can open my profile, menu, and nearby tracker just fine. It doesn't happen often but it exists and I remembered to bring this up because it just happened again. I hope I'm not the only one experiencing this bug either.

My Magmar 14xx is at a gym in a tourist town for 4+ months. Why?

Posted: 30 Jan 2017 01:54 PM PST

Me and my son were visiting a tourist coastal town around September 10th, 2016 and he placed Magmar 14xx in a gym near the town center. The Gym was level 8 before placement and he placed Magmar at 4th place (from lowest CP). This Magmar is still on the gym (at 3rd place now) and we are collecting a coin from it every day. We didn't try to train at that gym when we visited the town last month, but we tried to train at nearby gym (next to a church) level 8 and we couldn't start the fight. As soon as the "GO" text appeared, the game would throw us away from the fight. What could be causing such behaviour? We moved around gym for half an hour trying to find the right position, but to no avail. Maybe the similar thing happens at the gym where his Magmar is and almost noone can fight there?

Disallow duplicated pokemons at gyms to increase variety

Posted: 30 Jan 2017 07:49 PM PST

So as the tittle says, maybe I it weren't allowed to put for example 2 dragonites in one gym we would see more victrivells, ninetales, charizards, etc.

One problem would probably be that all the gyms would be identicals having at least a dragonite, lapras and snorlax, but right now I'm watching gyms of only snorlax or gyarados and things like that.

With this maybe it wouldn't be such an obvious choice wich pokemons pick to figt (not like when a gym has 6 vaporeons and 3 gyarados) and the most important is that it will f**k a lot of spoofers, so they can't put their 13 beloved dragonites across all the city (probably becaouse there would be already one in the gym)

So what do you think guys?

[Idea] Implementing Speed with Cooldowns.

Posted: 30 Jan 2017 05:49 AM PST

--PREFACE--

You know, speedy pokémon got the short straw in this game, right? Their speed stat, which in the main games used to be decisive for strategy, is nothing more than a measly modifier for Atk and Def, even after the rebalance: 1+(BaseSpe-75)/500. There's no Speed stat in PoGO. That means a pokémon speed depends completelly on their moves, not on the pokémon, which is like saying a heavy armored Paladin wielding a Dagger should be as fast as a Thief, a Rogue or a Ninja. Why use any of those, then? No wonder Vaporeon is so OP, having one of the fastest quick moves added to its high bulk!

I think... No, I am certain there should be a speed stat in PoGO. And here is my suggestion on how to implement it. Some have suggested that a speed stat should change the battle animations, but what I'm about to suggest is easier to implement for almost the same effect.

--SUGGESTION--

First, we need a BaseSpeed stat, which could be 2xSpeed, like Stamina. Their Speed by level would be Base Spd+IV*CPM, like the other stats. So, a level 40 perfect Electrode would get a speed of: (280+15)*0.7903001 = 233.14

Then, the Attack Speed (ASPD) would be simmilar to Niantic's current speed modifier: 1+(Speed-125)/500. This Electrode would have an ASPD of 1.216

Ok, so what does this ASPD do? It reduces Attack Duration. Base At. Duration would be the sum of 80% At. Animation and a 20% of Base Cooldown. Animations are fixed (though they could be shortened like they did with evolutions), but Cooldown would be reduced or augmented by ASPD. This means, for an Attack Duration of 80% (0% Cooldown), a pokémon would need an ASPD of 1.25, because 1/1.25 = 0.8

So, for 0% Cooldown, a pokémon would need 250 speed. The 125 in the formula is half of that, which would count as average instead of 75. This leaves a bit of gap between Electrode's maximum speed and 250, in case Niantic decides to rise the level cap to 50, or even implement status moves like Agility. Anything more than 250 would be redundant, as animation couldn't be reduced, but that simply means Ninjask, Deoxys and a few Mega-evos would get max ASPD at an earlier level, and/or with lower Speed IVs.

Of course, if they want to keep current At. Duration, all At. Animations would have to be reduced to 80%, which I think would be easier than making them fluctuate with speed like others have suggested (I have never seen anything like that in any MMO!). With the other 20% of base cooldown, base At. Duration would be kept unchanged for a pokémon with an ASPD of 1.

Now, CP would be calculated by multiplying the Atk part by the ASPD. Or they could even make two separated Power stats, one for Offense Power (Atk*Spd) and one for Defense Power (Def*Sta).

They could play with the delays too. Like, making priority moves like Quick Attack have no delay, or putting it before moves like Dig or Solar Beam.

I'll put a practical example of how this would work.

--EXAMPLE--

A Rhydon VS a Dugtrio, both level 30, 100%, with the same moveset: Mud Slap and EQ. The defender is a level 30, 100% Arcanine. For this example they'll spam only the Mud Slap.

Currently, Rhydon has (222+15)*0.7317 = 173.41 Atk. Dugtrio has (167+15)*0.7317 = 133.17 Atk.

Arcanine has (166+15)*0.7317 = 132.44 Def. I'm rounding to two decimals for simplicity, but as far as I know, the game doesn't round these stats: it only rounds HP.

Mud Slap has Power of 15 and duration of 1350 ms. It's also STAB and SE.

Now, as seen here, damage formula is FLOOR(0.5*POW*Atk/Def*STAB*Type)+1, where FLOOR means rounding down what's inside the parenthesis, cutting decimals. Then adding +1.

For Rhydon, a Mud Slap would do FLOOR(0.5*15*173,41/132,44*1,25*1,25)+1 = 16 damage to Arcanine.

For Dugtrio, a Mud Slap would do FLOOR(0.5*15*133,17/132,44*1,25*1,25)+1 = 12 damage to Arcanine.

With current stats, the damage per second against Arcanine from Rhydon is 16/1350*1000 = 11.85 DPS For Dugtrio it's 12/1350*1000 = 8.89 DPS, which is 0.75 times Rhydon's.

Rhydon is clearly superior here: Stronger, tankier... There is practically no reason to use Dugtrio for combat if you have a Rhydon. Even for prestiging, a low level Rhydon could do better, if only for survivability.

Now let's implement my changes. The attack and def stats wouldn't have the speed modifier anymore, so Rhydon would get (239+15)*0.7317 = 185.85 Atk, while Dugtrio would have (153+15)*0.7317 = 122.93 Atk.

Arcanine would have (160+15)*0.7317 = 128.05 Def.

For Rhydon, a Mud Slap would do FLOOR(0.5*15*185.85/128.05*1,25*1,25)+1 = 18 damage to Arcanine.

For Dugtrio, a Mud Slap would do FLOOR(0.5*15*122.93/128.05*1,25*1,25)+1 = 12 damage to Arcanine.

Things look even grimmer for Dugtrio now, but let's look at what speed would do.

Rhydon would have (80+15)*0.7317 = 69.51 Spd, while Dugtrio has (240+15)*0.7317 = 186.58 Spd

Their ASPD would be 1+(69.51-125)/500 = 0.88902 for Rhydon and 1+(186.58-125)/500 = 1.12316 for Dugtrio.

Attack animation would be reduced to 80%, so Base At. Duration of Mud Slap would be 1080*1,25, or 1080+1080*0.25 = 1350 miliseconds, rounding decimals. 1080 of Animation and 270 of base delay.

For Rhydon, this would mean an At. Duration of 1350/0.88902 = 1519 ms. For Dugtrio, 1350/1.12316 = 1202 ms

With the ASPD changes, the damage per second for Rhydon would be 18/1519*1000 = 11.85 DPS, almost the same as before, but rounding up. For Dugtrio, however, it's 12/1202*1000 = 9.98 DPS, which is 0.84 times Rhydon's.

--CONCLUSSIONS--

Did you expect Dugtrio to suddenly become stronger than Rhydon? Of course not, silly. Even if the gap is way tighter, Rhydon still deals more damage per second And since we took the speed bonus from defense, the gap in defense became a bit wider, making Rhydon even tankier than Dugtrio.

However, now Dugtrio has two advantages over Rhydon. It's attack being faster means it can dodge easier, compensating it's fragility, while Rhydon would have to tank most of the hits and might waste many potions. Also, Dugtrio's Earthquake would be charged earlier than Rhydon's so, for short combats (not Snorlax) where you know a couple EQs from either of them is enough or more than enough, Dugtrio would be the best option. Thus, Dugtrio wouldn't be a beast but it'd have it's niche as the fastest Ground type.

When defending, Rhydon is generally better too, in both damage and tankiness, but the ASPD could also be applied to the ~2 seconds delay between attacks (~2/1.25 = ~1,6 minimum delay). This means, a fast defender may be fragile, but it would attack more often and be harder to dodge than a slow defender. Stone Walls, Glass Cannons or Fragile Speedsters, everyone would have a role in a gym, instead of only the Stone Walls. We would not only see (a bit) more diversity of pokémon in gyms, but also more variety of defending styles, making combats more interesting.

... Whew! Sorry for the neverending post. Please leave your opinion or tell me if you see something wrong. I believe with this, an HP constant, rebalancing mixed vs specialized defenders, and a better type effectiveness, we would reach a pretty good balance. It shouldn't be too hard, right? I hope you enjoyed the read!

TL;DR - Pokemon attack speed is almost irrelevant in the game, causing Pokemon whose speed was their main benefit in the original games to be much weaker than they should be in PoGo. Through a specific formula, I suggest using the attack speed stat as a multiplier for the duration an attack takes to execute, closing the gap of imbalance and bringing pokemon closer to their real ability. You know what would be a super cool idea? "Step XP Days."

Posted: 30 Jan 2017 06:57 AM PST

Maybe in the summertime, Niantic could have some single-day events where taking steps (or walking certain measures of KM) would earn you XP in some way. It would be a great way to go out and walk while getting some XP out of the deal.

Just my idea. Niantic will never do it of course cuz they're not great.

Why do people put numbers after their Pokemon?

Posted: 30 Jan 2017 04:01 PM PST

Almost whenever I see people's Pokemn lists, all their Pokemon have numbers after them like "Snorlax58" and "Tangela38". What do these numbers mean? Did I miss something about putting numbers after Pokemon names?

Thanks.

[discussion] Maybe it is *us* who have gotten the gym game wrong?

Posted: 30 Jan 2017 07:11 AM PST

I've been thinking a lot when I have been on foot on the way to gyms to fight the umpteens of Rhydon, Garys, and Dragonite, which always reside in gyms.

Of course, they have high CP, so we put them in there. But none of those are actually good defenders. Rhydons melt away in front of Vapes, Garys are mincemeat for Jolteons, and Dragonites fall easily to Dewgong, Cloyster and Jynx, among others.

Of all the defenders I meet, only Vaporeon and Snorlax are commonly a nuisance.

But... there are good defenders in the game. Sometimes I come up against a Bubble Poliwrath, a Lapras or an Exceggcutor. They usually aren't in gyms, because of not-top level CP. But, man, they drain away my revives and potions.

So, if one could put togheter a team of 10 people, which all only use good defenders, based on how good defenders they actually are, instead of just having high CP? They we would have gyms filled with Poliwrath, Lapras, Snorlax and Exceggutors and maybe other annoying defenders I don't know about.

This would be team play, with emphasis on TEAM. So maybe it isn't Niantic doing things wrong. It is we who can't work together. What do you think? Are there any real teams out there playing this way?

Oh well, just my two cents of thought. Now I'll fart away to the next gym.

[Question] So how do bots work? Are they able to auto-take gyms?

Posted: 30 Jan 2017 11:24 AM PST

I know no one HERE cheats of course, but I am curious how bots work (or if they are even still working or if Niantic somehow got rid of them). Here's why I ask.

We have a player in our town who takes every gym by themselves every night. He does this remotely, we have stood at gyms and watched him take them. And yes, multiple reports, nothing done of course. We accept that he enjoys ruining the game for the rest of us. I just assumed he was spoofing, which I kind of understand (the phone gives out fake GPS so Niantic THINKS you are at a gym when you are really on your couch).

But my question is, this saturday morning I happened to get up pretty damn early because my dog wanted to walk. So I walked past a gym at 6AM that just had him in it (as he does every morning). I took it, and walked to the next nearest one, about 2 blocks away, also with him in it. I take that. I look back and see he has already retaken the 1st gym, and I now see him battling the gym I am standing under. It is no later than 6:15 AM on a Saturday morning!! I refuse to believe anyone this lazy is actually awake and guarding their gyms even to spoof, it HAS to be automated somehow. So how is he doing it? Thanks.

Bots taking gyms before you can do your Pokemon in

Posted: 30 Jan 2017 04:00 PM PST

Hey, I live and work in the New York City area. For the past week or so I can't train at a gym and put a Pokemon in, someone else has put theirs in first. No one else around, never see people playing much anymore anyway. Not a problem when taking down another team with the priority for winners. Anyone seen an increase in this type of activity? Really not worth building a gym if this is going to keep happening.

[Discussion] What is your "white whale"?

Posted: 30 Jan 2017 05:58 PM PST

I'm asking this as I feel I'm only still playing in the hope of getting my last regional entry for the Pokedex. I need to hatch a Cleffa. I have the rest (even Tauros to go with my Kangaskhan collection) but Cleffa eludes me.

I'd completed the 'dex with my one Lapras caught in the wild but since the babies I've hatched 4 Igglybuff, 4 Pichu, 2 Togepi and one each of the 10km babies.

I've taken up battling gyms seriously at last but only to collect coins for incubators in the hope of hatching a 2km egg. 98% of my eggs seem to be 5km though since the last event.

So if you've got one Pokemon left for your Pokedex (excluding regionals) what is it? And how close have you been?
