Learn Dota 2 - Having difficulties winning games, despite doing well

Having difficulties winning games, despite doing well

Posted: 13 Aug 2018 05:15 PM PDT

I've never been a person to blame my team. I tilt just as much as anybody else but I've always believed if you're good enough you can solo carry games.

Apparently I'm either not good enough or I'm wrong because 3 out of my last 4 solo games have felt unwinnable. I won my lane in 2 of them and broke even in another 2. And we still lose because someone decided it was their time to throw or give up or lose 2 lanes despite me rotating whenever possible.

It's honestly getting to the point where I don't want to play Dota anymore.

In two of these games (SF and the first Templar one), I can pinpoint where I made a major mistake, but the other two seemed totally unwinnable. I just find it ridiculous that my team needs to carry someone every single game - especially when that player is trying to dive for kills or gives up after one bad fight or cries over mic about everyone else.

Can someone explain why his build is like that? Why build manta first and no bkb? Thank you in advance!

Micro Question: How do I tab individual units for certain characters?

Posted: 13 Aug 2018 04:59 PM PDT

Such as Nature's Prophet, is there a way to make it so tabbing doesn't put me in control of the whole horde of controlled units? I assume Enigma eidolons work the same way. I want it to default to tabbing through each individual unit.

First ranked game: what couldve gone better/what could I have done better?

Posted: 13 Aug 2018 04:57 PM PDT

I'm the weaver in this game playing with the Veno, just wondering if my build was suitable for the situation or if I should have changed anything. Also anything my team could have done better and what the enemy team were lacking in.

Currently trying to master Shadow fiend (2.7k MMR). What could have I done better to beat kunkka at mid?

Posted: 13 Aug 2018 08:40 PM PDT

Basically I got demolished by a smurf/booster playing Kunkka at mid. I felt helpless and couldn't fight back after he got x mark.
How do I not get demolished next time?

Shiva's Guard

Posted: 13 Aug 2018 04:41 PM PDT

Hey, I'd say I'm pretty experienced with Dota, however, there is one item that I rarely get-Shiva's guard. I just want to check but am I right in believing that it is good for spell casters (bristle, od, etc) who need armour and benefit from a slow? That is usually when I get it and don't find myself building it that often however as of late I've gotten it more and more.

I lost an hour thirty match last night. I have downloaded the replay. Does anyone have any tips on what to look out for? Does anyone have any tips for ultra late game in general?

Does anyone have any tips on what to look out for?

Planning to watch an hour thirty game of a match I played last night. I was playing as a mid Mirana. I have decided to watch this replay because I find that I made many mistakes espacially as it was such a long game. I must admit I'm not very good at watching replays because I'm not sure what I'm looking out for - and I have a bias towards watching myself rather than the game as a whole.

Before I start watching, does anyone have any tips as to what I should look out for?

Does anyone have any tips for ultra late game in general?

I feel that I was having trouble doing:

  • Starting Roshan fights
  • Targeting the right heroes
  • Trouble not taking damage - sometimes I start fights with 80% hp (maybe how to deal with techies and pushing lanes fast without taking mega creep damage)
  • Thinking about the right item build

Im currently not looking for help with

  • How to play the hero
  • How to last hit
  • How to farm more effeciently
  • How to turn on voice chat

Thank you in advance for any help! I do hope I don't get downvoted as my previous /r/LearnDota2 posts have.

Finally got my rank, slightly confused?

Posted: 13 Aug 2018 04:26 PM PDT

So I won 17 out of my 20 placement matches (party and solo being counted here) I got my rank set at Guardian 4 after my solo games and have only climed it up to Crusader 1 at 6% currently. However last season I ranked as a Legend 1 and even with my rank being as low as it is most of my games are against Archon and Legend and if I lose I lose 30+% on my rank. Did anyone else have issues with the match making and how is this new season set. I thought it was entirely based of win/loss ratio and it still factored in last season and excluded a lot of your personal play? Can someone explain this season to me a bit and what I need to do to climb my rank back up?

Gained MMR after a loss?

The percentage bar went from 25% to 35% after a loss? Does this mean I gained MMR?

AM no BF itemization? Kind of just for fun, but also want to learn about items.

Posted: 13 Aug 2018 06:35 AM PDT

i know its bad, and isnt good in REAL meta. but i like the hero and just find him fun. so for i guess unranked, and just a thought exercise to help understand itemization and item choices throughout games:

I like anti mage. I like his abilities and like fighting with him. I like being relevant with him earlier and was wondering, what would I build if I was trying to fight more early, and skip battlefury? I know BF is always better, but AM sucks this meta and so does AFK farming kind of.

I was thinking he needs: strength/health cuz hes squishy. Agi cuz he wants damage and scales very well with attack speed. And mana regen cuz blink is kind of a mana hungry ability.

Aquila seems a no-brainer. Power treads still is also pretty obvious. I guess a wand if im fighting because its just cost efficient stats. As for the cheap mid game items:

Dragon lance is very cost efficient str/agi item. Echo sabre is nice for a bit of damage, and gives solid strength and mana regen. Don't think I could go both though.

Oh yeah, helm seems decent all around. Can buy early and lets him keep his health up, to push and hit creeps and then pop back into fights full health.

Again I know this is bad. But I feel like people telling me why specific items and choices are bad will help me to learn more about them. And then I will know more for the future.

Thanks guys :]

Lifestealer

Posted: 13 Aug 2018 11:10 AM PDT

What is the most popular LS build right now and how is he generally played? He's a hard carry that i've grown to like alot, despite usually going for agi carries. I've seen some radiance builds on dotabuff and stuff, but i'm not a huge fan of the item (even though its definitely a good item).

I have basically no experience whatsoever with the hero except playing against him so be as basic as you want.

match review (if anyone has time)

Posted: 13 Aug 2018 11:01 AM PDT

hey all!

so I posted here earlier asking for tips for impacting the game more, and some people were kind enough to look through my matches; one person was kind enough to even review part of one. I played a new match as jakiro (https://www.dotabuff.com/matches/4058435209) where I tried to take most of the critique into account, but obviously I still made a ton of errors, some that had been identified previously:

  1. using tp scrolls unnecessarily to get back to lane and etc
  2. slow reaction times
  3. doing next to nothing to the creeps during the laning phase (you'll see what I mean if you watch the match, it wasn't pretty)
  4. getting cliffed and killed off by being too aggressive during the laning phase (space created??)

we still managed to throw something like a 16k in the end somehow; I guess when we started seeing a rapier getting thrown around we stopped taking the game seriously. but other than whatever went on in the last 10-20 min, I'd appreciate it if someone would take a quick look through and let me know what sorts of things I managed to fuck up :)

How do you win in this meta?

Posted: 13 Aug 2018 05:20 PM PDT

I have played very little in the past 6 months, I was 4k mmr at my peak, after that, and currently hovering between 3.7k-3.9k mmr, or legend 4.

I just came back after a long break because of some tests, and obviously lost a lot. But I had one problem, I could not win. I had some bad luck in my games, and we happened to lose all lanes except for mine like 3 games in a row. In one game, I was having an amazing lane, and the game felt very good, however I felt like I cannot win it once we started fighting as a team. In another game, playing support this time we had an amazing lane, but lost the other two lanes again, and the same thing happened. We could pick them off, but fighting as a team was impossible.

I had a couple more games, where I had a good lane, and after that I felt everything falling apart.

[Pos5] What to do when you lose the mid-game vision battle?

Posted: 13 Aug 2018 07:31 AM PDT

Match ID: 4058103212, I was shadow shaman.

Hey,

So I got the support version of styled on yesterday in a game regarding vision and am trying to learn from the loss. The enemy CM seemed to have my number regarding wards the whole game, so I re-watched and that is exactly what happened. The CM correctly identified that we would want to occupy their jungle after the laning phase ended, and so had key wards to spot rotations, particularly across the bulk of the mid-game, starting from roughly ~9-11mins game time. Feel free to skip to 9:15, that is when CM places the first crucial ward on the column behind our offlane tower.

My question is this: if the enemy beats you in the vision battle, which in this case was by having good vision of the area of the map we wanted to play in, do you:

  • double-down, stick to the plan and try to find their wards & lay your own via smoking
  • adjust your game plan and try to occupy a different region of the map which whilst being sub-optimal renders their vision useless (either by sitting on our side of the river and AFK farming or by occupying mid+bot+dire offlane jungle, rather than top+dire safelane jungle)
  • do something else that I haven't thought of?

P.S. If you want to critique my play feel free. It's not the point of the post but I'm always keen to learn. I definitely have something to learn about how X-marks affects my team-fight positioning!

Stuck in a losing slump. And tips for me and my recent games?

Posted: 13 Aug 2018 08:21 AM PDT

Two weeks ago and before that I was doing pretty well. I was winning basically most of my games and having no problems, then all of a sudden a huge losing streak came upon me and ever since then I can't get more than two wins in a row this week. Am I doing something wrong? Am I changing my play style without me knowing it? What are some things I can do to get out of this?

Dotabuff: https://www.dotabuff.com/players/88227553/matches

I'm going on vacation in a week so I'm hoping this will hard reset my Brian so when I come back this doesn't happen again. Still watching the international though can't miss out on that!

Dear god this game was intense! (Played Arc Warden... And lost.)

Posted: 12 Aug 2018 09:27 PM PDT

Hello,

Earlier I had this game where I picked Arc Warden (https://www.dotabuff.com/matches/4057425019) And by god, it was one of the most intense matches I've played.

To summarise it, it started with a mediocre mid, bad bot (due to spirit breaker ganking all the time leaving pl alone) and a good top (my lane). We managed to hold up and farm enough items to catch up to the enemy. We were going well, until we tried to highground. The SF was stubborn. When I asked to 5-man to push, he just farmed jungle. When I asked him to stop chasing an earth shaker in the jungle, he just kept chasing him (my teammates had a bad habit of following sf), resulting in 4 of my allies dying. Eventually, we lost teamfights due to being outnumbered (and my shitty micro), lost a battle in the rosh pit, and lost the game.

Except for my horrible micro skills, what could've I done better in terms of strategy? I'm clueless.

Is there a way to spawn multiple creeps in Demo mode?

Posted: 13 Aug 2018 01:47 AM PDT

Right now when I want to experiment, I press Enter and type command

-createhero npc_dota_creep_badguys_melee_upgraded_mega enemy

So, the question is: Is there some easy way to spawn, lets say, 10 Mega creeps without having to "Enter - CTRL V - Enter" this command 10 times?

How do I not get decimated in seconds and how do i level up fast?

Posted: 12 Aug 2018 10:20 PM PDT

Im very VERY new to Dota 2 and in pvp matches ive noticed that i will get completed raped by some guy as dragon knight in like 5 seconds after getting stunned. I also realized that at the end of the game i would be at level 14 and they would be 25 even i was trying my best to farm creeps.
