Weekly /r/Games Discussion - What have you been playing, and what do you think of it? Posted: 12 Aug 2018 02:09 PM PDT Please use this thread to discuss whatever you've been playing lately (old or new, any platform, AAA or indie). As usual, please don't just list the names of games as your entire post, make sure to elaborate with your thoughts on the games. Writing the names of the games in bold is nice, to make it easier for people skimming the thread to pick out the names. Please also make sure to use spoiler tags if you're posting anything about a game's plot that might significantly hurt the experience of others that haven't played the game yet (no matter how old or new the game is). Since this thread is likely to fill up quickly, consider sorting the comments by "new" (instead of "best" or "top") to see the newest posts. For a subreddit devoted to this type of discussion during the rest of the week, please check out /r/WhatAreYouPlaying. /r/Games has a Discord server! Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka on the creation of World 1-1 Posted: 12 Aug 2018 07:59 PM PDT Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zRGRJRUWafY Sorry if you've already seen this! It hasn't been posted before on this subreddit so I hope you don't mind. Even if you've seen it, it's a nice video to rewatch now and again. In the video Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka discuss the design and thought process that went into making the first level of the original Super Mario Bros. It's pretty fascinating stuff, and a great example of good game design. One big point they mention is how they attempt to teach the player without an explicit tutorial area, by using clever enemy and block placement in order to show the player what their goal is. Are there any other games that you guys like that do this? [link] [comments] |
After years of work, our first title will finally be released to Steam! Posted: 12 Aug 2018 06:01 PM PDT Mist of the Dark is a player vs player experience engineered to create horrifying, tense situations as you and your fellow soldiers try desperately to bring down a grotesque monster before it threatens the very existence of the human race. Delve deep into it's lair in the caves or it's hunting grounds in the sewers to put an end to the murderous rampage. Or... become the monster itself and decimate anything that moves. Mist of the Dark is currently in early access alpha and will always be a free-to-play title. Here at Visualistic Studios we wanted to create a game that tested your mettle as well as your skills to survive as a team. For us, some things were imperative to the creation of Mist of the Dark:
We all wanted to create a game we want to play, but understand how imperative it is to keep our ear to the ground and really listen to the community. Constructive criticisms are always welcomed and encouraged. Until Steam officially releases in the coming days, you can find a game key here. Be sure to check out our subreddit too! How does Exapunks compare to other Zachtronics games? Posted: 12 Aug 2018 09:54 PM PDT Exapunks, a new game from Zachtronics, launched in early access last week. There have been a few threads about the game in r/games, but nothing since launch. If you are playing the game:

Subspace Emissary Retrospective Posted: 13 Aug 2018 07:24 AM PDT Subspace Emissary Retrospective After nearly a decade away I've revisited Brawl's famous adventure mode and wish to share my thoughts. I'll start with the positives; as to be expected, the cutscenes are fantastic and are clearly the star of the show. They're full of life, personality, and detail, while also at times breathtaking and epic. The visuals of these cutscenes hold up fairly well today, though they are obviously trounced by the character trailers we get nowadays. As far as gameplay goes, the constant switching of characters and parties from stage to stage is an excellent way to keep things fresh and interesting. You're never playing as one character for significantly longer than the rest, even with the option to choose between a handful of fighters at the start of each stage (a very nice, small touch that allows you to mostly avoid characters you can't stand). Boss fights against Ridley, Porky and Rayquaza are fun and memorable challenges against familiar enemies, however they are few and far between compared to the vast number of bosses and standard enemies. This leads me to the negatives. Most enemies and bosses are original creations for Smash Bros. Brawl, and are totally generic. To make matters worse, there are only about 12 different varieties that you fight constantly for the entire campaign. Once in a while you'll encounter a recognizable enemy such as goombas or hammer bros, but these are infrequent. Original enemies could have been a good idea but they all look like rejected demon designs from the Persona series and don't fit well with Smash Bros. in my opinion. The same is true for most bosses. Aside from the aforementioned bosses from Pokémon, Earthbound, and Metroid, most of the other bosses are bland robotic monsters. Some are fought multiple times, the worst of which (Galleom) appears twice in row for no reason other than to use different characters to beat it. The level design is just as boring as the enemies are. Most levels are straightforward platforming stages with extremely light exploration. Meaning you'll run down a straight path and occasionally jump over an obstacle, come to a fork in the road and choose a path. One path will be a dead end with enemies or a key, the other the way forward. From time to time there are some light puzzles to solve, like a room full of teleporters where you trial-and-error your way to the exit. The stages play like extended versions of Melee's adventure mode levels, however where those levels were short, these take up way too much time compared to fights against CPUs and bosses. When the game asks you to do some actual platforming it becomes very apparent that the controls were not meant for precision jumps. I found myself very frustrated with these sections, dying on relatively simple jumps as most characters. Some characters fair better, particularly Pit, which I suspect is why you start your first platforming level as him. I thought I was going to enjoy walking down memory lane with the Subspace Emissary but aside from the amazing cutscenes I can't say I enjoyed much at all. The stages are bland, the enemies uninteresting, and most bosses a slog. I can see why Sakurai was upset with the cutscenes being uploaded to YouTube, because there is no reason to play this mode except for those cutscenes. Melee's adventure mode struck a good balance between short levels with recognizable enemies and unique fights with characters on their home stages. This has me hoping that the rumored Spirits mode in Ultimate is similar to Melee's adventure mode with added classic bosses (Dracula, Rathalos). That would be much more representative of Smash than nearly all of Subspace Emissary's stages. Without the cutscenes, Subspace Emissary is a severely sub-par action platformer. [I played on Hard mode and using Project M, it took me 5 hours 45 minutes] TLDR: Subspace Emissary isn't as good as I remember it. Here are some positives and negatives: +Cutscenes are fantastic +Character switching/variety +Ridley, porky, Rayquaza (recognizable bosses) -Generic and repeated boss fights (galleom twice in a row) -level design uninspired -enemies generic (12 types) -controls not meant for platforming [link] [comments] |
