We need a "The Sprint" for the development of Halo Infite

Posted: 08 Jul 2018 11:17 AM PDT

The Sprint for Halo 5 was incredible allowed us to see what is happening during the developement of a game, and i think it should return for Halo Infinite, especially with the new engine and art style.

Taking a look at MCC Insider's somewhat dramatic reduced load times compared to current retail version of MCC!

Posted: 08 Jul 2018 11:55 AM PDT

Mentioned in Development Update #3, 343 has claimed that MP map loading speeds have been dramatically reduced by about 40% via in game texture streaming.

Texture streaming is something the engineering folks have been working on and I'm told some of the fruits of their labor are already noticeable in-game via considerably quicker load times. Greg says that MP map load times across the board are significantly quicker (approx. 35-40% of what they were previously).

I noticed this was improved in flight 1, but couldn't really talk about it then nor could I really test it easily (I couldn't compare variables between 4v4 matchmaking in the Insider to solo customs in the retail). Now that the Insider can be discussed and we have access to almost everything the game has to offer I wanted to test it out and share what I found.

I did these load time tests on my Xbox One X playing on a 1080p TV using the full download of the MCC Insider (no Intelligent Delivery changes) and the retail version of MCC with both being on an external 7200rpm hard drive. I timed these using my iPhone's stopwatch and started the timer when the in-game timer hit :00 up until the load screen disappeared and the game launched into a cut scene or black/blue screen (that nostalgic H2 blue screen). Timing could be off by a few milliseconds due to human error, but I think I am good since most of these are fairly large reductions. For multiplayer, each game I tested with an Arena map (4v4) and also a BTB map (8v8) loading into a solo custom. For campaign, I simply loaded into the start of a fresh copy of each mission (rally point Alpha) with no skulls on.

Game Map/Mission Retail MCC Insider MCC Percent Reduction
Multiplayer
Halo: CE Hang Em High 5.95 5.85 -1.68%
Halo: CE Sidewinder 3.96 3.58 -9.60%

Halo 3 High Ground 11.03 9.25 -16.14%
Halo 3 Rats Nest 10.3 8.18 -20.58%
Halo 4 Haven 11.92 9.83 -17.53%
Halo 4 Vortex 14.56 9.63 -33.86%

An update on Noble Team half sleeve for those interested

Is it just me or is playing the Halo games in canonical order feel like the ultimate revenge story?

Posted: 08 Jul 2018 01:30 PM PDT

Especially in Halo Reach to Combat Evolved; you go from getting your ass kicked in Reach to easily kicking ass in Halo 1.

I really hope terminals return in Infinite

Posted: 08 Jul 2018 07:48 PM PDT

One of my favourite features of CE:A, H2A and H4 were the animated terminals that you could find throughout the levels. Collectibles and secrets are always fun, and it's even better when they provide additional story and context. My personal favourites were the CE:A terminals, they really helped to flesh out the backstory of the original game and gave Sparks some great development. I love the art style and the use of the soundtrack, and in general I feel like they add a lot to the game, even as a small feature. I sorely missed them in 5, so it would be fantastic if they made a comeback in Infinite. Perhaps they could cover some of the events that occurred between the two games.
