Looking to possibly be a support player, how to transition from being a core?

Posted: 31 Mar 2018 04:28 PM PDT

I used to be an almost exclusive core player. Dotabuff says I am a core in 97% of my games. But recently, my performance has been lackluster across multiple levels (playing for fun, playing seriously in solo q, seriously in stacks, seriously in tournaments like ld2l and echo league). And I got to a breaking point and I said to myself, "I need a break from core for a while". And so here I am. I might not stay a support player, but for now I need some relief from core.

I have some bad habits though as a (mostly pos 5) support. First, sometimes I feel like I end up getting backed up on wards. Say I buy the 2 in stock. I go out to place them and I end up tanking a gank, whatever that's fine. Another ward has come up and I buy a sentry or 2 to see if the gank was because they saw me. I make my way out there and then a core is in trouble, so I tp to shrine and trade myself for my core. But my wards are still not placed. And then a wave is pushed to our t3 top and my cores don't farm it for whatever reason, so I push it out a couple of waves. I now have 4 wards and I'm like "crap, this is really bad". So is this really bad? Should I give some to my pos 4 if this happens? How can I help prevent this.

Some general questions coming up. When pulling do I attempt to go for the cs or just focus on pulling through? Do I ever not pull through when it isn't a catapult wave? Where should my first couple of wards go? Right now I mostly put them in the safelane to see when the offlane leaves/a support tps up, and one for mid. When to and not to use cliff wards? Any other big support items to consider other than glimmer/force/blink/ghost/crest/euls/sometimes aghs? Any other tips for a new-ish support player?

Lastly, whether core or support, how to deal with your shortcomings as a support?

Thanks in advance for all the answers!

Want to try out roaming (have never played this before). What's the easiest roaming hero to learn, to get the basics of this role?

Posted: 31 Mar 2018 05:08 PM PDT

My guess is that it's one of Spirit Breaker or Night Stalker, since both of these seem pretty straightforward mechanically. Not sure which one has harder decision making.

The rest of the classic roamers seem a lot harder, like Earth Spirit, Earthshaker, Sand King, Io, Enchantress, Chen, etc.

How to play hard lanes with meepo?

Posted: 31 Mar 2018 04:28 PM PDT

I recently started playing meepo mid and I was wondering how to play against strong laners with lots of nuke potential. Like a sf or a Lina for example. Do you just keep sending one back to base and heal? Do you keep both in lane to last hit better? Do you keep one in lane and one stacking camps in the jungle? Or do you just ditch the lane once you get levels and hit the jungle?

Edit: Obviously I don't try to play meepo against strong laners like this but if the situation arises how should I play it out?

I'm finding it difficult to justify picking any offlane hero that isn't Tidehunter. Am I wrong?

Posted: 31 Mar 2018 07:58 AM PDT

I'm a returning player after a few years away, just getting back into the game. Back in the day I used to play a lot of offlane and I had a relatively varied hero pool of Tide, Phoenix, Lich, Clock, Windrunner (..or uh.. ranger..), Centaur, Bristleback, etc etc.. but on coming back to the game and playing a few matches I'm finding it really difficult to pick anything other than Tide. It's not that I've forgotten how to play the others, it's just that Tide gives me:

  • Survivability both in terms of dealing with lane harass or going round the corner to farm ancients after a few levels

  • A gigantic AoE ultimate that can win a teamfight with one button press

  • Low reliance on specific items, so he turns into a tanky aura carrier late game. You get the blink, and then you want Arcane Boots so you might as well get the Guardian Greaves too, but after that you can build basically whatever you want that's going to help the team out

  • A gigantic AoE ultimate. Did I mention that bit?

No other hero in my pool seems to do nearly as much, and when I do pick someone else I can't shake the feeling that if I'd picked Tide instead then we'd have a much better chance of winning the game.

Am I wrong about this? Are there any other heroes that can give the same feeling?

Does turbo have any matchmaking whatsoever?

Posted: 31 Mar 2018 02:27 PM PDT

The matchmaking is so bad that it really reaches comical levels. It's really something else. Losing 10 games in a row is not uncommon at all. Having the score of 30-4 is not uncommon. Having people say "this is my first game" is not uncommon. I have about 200 hours in myself.

Posted: 31 Mar 2018 09:23 AM PDT

I'm new to Dota 2 and I see I can't use chat (outside of match) before I hit Account Level 5. I can't see anywhere that mentions my account level... help?

How do you get into a soloqueing mindset as a support?

Posted: 31 Mar 2018 08:04 AM PDT

Hey there people,

Im kind of new to dota, got about 100 games in, have played league in beta and a little dota1 beforehand. I watched all of the day9 learns dota videos, and have some experienced friends i can play with sometimes. I know my basic rules, and while im pretty bad right now i'd like to think i'm improving.

And thats were the problem lies. I really enjoy playing support and while i don't have the wardtimings down quite yet. i can do you a great pullthrough. This is all fine and dandy when i play with my friends(3-4k), i support, they farm, we keep lanes pushed, we win.

But if i'm in soloqueue, being sub 2k atm, i just get so frustrated. My carry refuses to farm, i end up tping to defend a tower alone and die despite saying it in voice chat, i can't place deep wards, because everybody refuses to push lanes and has a mexican standoff in mid while naix just grabs rax and walks out.

And while i could probably get to 3k by just improving on my mechanics, how can i do that without getting so damn frustrated, what do you guys do?

Whats the difference between a semi carry and sof carry.

Posted: 31 Mar 2018 09:38 AM PDT

I already know what a hard carry is. A hard carry likes to have your average 45 minute game unless they are like smome hyper carry hero like Spectre, antimage,or Medusa then they like to stall the game out and afk farm for 30 minutes. When you play them, you aren't playing DotA, you are playing Farmville. The other farming carries get their items faster through aoe with levelsand build cheaper items. Soft carries like to end the game a bit faster. They usually want to push early and also are good at sieging. Semi carries come online a bit faster like soft carries. They are usually midlanners. Everyone vfights over it but not every midlanners is a carry like Zeus. He can carry a game if you are against a bunch of peruvians and I have complely destroyed as him before but he doesn't scale all that well because no rightclick damage or attack speed. Anyways, what's the difference between a soft carry and semi carry.

When should I start playing ranked?

Posted: 31 Mar 2018 12:53 AM PDT

I'm relatively new to Dota2 and have played a bunch of DotA 1. I've just hit 300 games in Dota2, and thinking of when I should transition to ranked games.

Is anybody using the current PL Phantom Rush bug in games?

Posted: 31 Mar 2018 01:22 AM PDT

And if so, how? I mean, does it work/is it worth trying?

For those who don't know: Dota Bowie recently made a video on it. I tested it and it still works in 7.12.

In short, if you use Phantom Rush on an enemy unit, then A click on an item on the ground (fast enough before u reach the enemy unit), you Phantom Rush all the way to that item. With goddamn 800 movespeed.

How do you play NP as 4/5?

Posted: 31 Mar 2018 02:45 AM PDT

Like how does it even work? Yeah he can be anywhere but his sprout is meh as cc and usually you max treants over sprout. The only thing that makes NP quite annoying in the early game is his right clicks. How?

How to lane against Offlane Ench?

Posted: 30 Mar 2018 11:53 PM PDT

Just played as Weaver with a support WD against Ench. Couldn't do anything about her, and was behind for the rest of the game. I picked Weaver thinking Geminate Attack would help deal damage, and that she couldn't kill me. I was right about both, but she zoned me away from cs.

Anybody got any tips? Good heroes to lane against her? Strategies for zoning and killing her? Thanks in advance.
