Greetings r/Civ.

Welcome to the Weekly Questions thread. Got any questions you've been keeping in your chest? Need some advice from more seasoned players? Conversely, do you have in-game knowledge that might help your peers out? Then come and post in this thread. Don't be afraid to ask. Post it here no matter how silly sounding it gets.

To help avoid confusion, please state for which game you are playing.

There is currently a bug with running the Rise & Fall Expansion with the existing DLC which in some cases makes it impossible to start a game. A more detailed explanation of this bug can be found in this post.

As a temporary fix until we can get an official patch, you can download either this unofficial patch by Deliverator23, or with this patch by Gedemon.

A Case for Culture

It's a typical game. I'm playing the Netherlands again. Trounced my Spanish neighbor. Aggressively out-settle America and screw over their weak city loyalty. I'm building Polders, Industrial Zones, Campuses, Harbors everywhere. Hell, even my after-though Dutch religion is 2nd in the world. It's 1400 AD. I see an odd notice pop up on my screen:

"Greece is one Civ away from a Culture Victory"

That's odd. The other Civs must be really culturally weak, I guess. Georgia and the Aztecs (who are fighting Greece now) should be able to put him down. Pericles isn't militarily strong. Plus, he's on the other side of the globe, so it's not like I can do anything about it anyway.

I figure I'll queue up some Theater Zones. I have monuments all over. A few "chopped" early wonders, and the two I stole from Spain. I'm not worried. I'll be fine.

1430AD. Game Over animation shows up on my screen.

When looking at the end game graphs, I see several sudden jumps in Greek culture as the game winds down. It's Pericles special advantage -- +5% Culture for each City State he's Suzerain of. He just kept taking control of City States. But how did he do it so effortlessly? I decided to start up my next game as Pericles to find out.

Cheap Theater District (Acropolis) early on + Culture-focused Pantheon + Culture preference on City States --> A lot of early Culture. Obviously. That gives you the better Governments sooner and better Policies sooner. Obviously. What I didn't realize, though, is that many policies also include ONE ENVOY.

By generating Culture faster, I was also generating Envoys faster. I was becoming Suzerain faster than anyone else, and that was then giving me a 5% Culture bonus, which sped up the culture snowball effect.

Additionally, those Envoys were unlocking City State bonuses for me faster than most. I was feeding off all those bonuses, my Leader bonus, and my already high Culture. I saved Envoys I didn't immediately need so that I could instantly re-take control of City States. At one point I had 14 Envoys saved up.

Culture rushed me into late game policies at an ungodly speed. I soon unlocked the Policy where you get 10% bonus Culture for each City State. At that point I was in control of 11 of them. A few turns later, I got the policy where got 10% bonus to Science for each City State and instantly doubled my Scientific Output!

It's 1700 AD and I'm Culturally dominant over everyone except Rome (he's the big dog on the other continent and has captured some nice culture cities over there). I'm researching Future Civic 8. My Governors are getting maxed out with pointless promotions every other turn. However, my culture lead gave me the tech lead so I could easily Space Race a victory if I wanted, or I can just toss a few trade routes at Rome and wait patiently for them to buy my Blue Jeans.

I've always overlooked Culture in this game. I generate enough through Monuments + Population to stay in the hunt. I prize Industry and Commerce because they give me the power to build/buy what's needed. I price Science so I can keep a small but efficient elite military ( hate micromanaging). I enjoy Religion because of the clever benefits and shadow war between Apostles. I've ever really liked Culture that much. I hate having Great Writers I can't use. I don't see Culture "flipping" cities like in the old days. I just rarely build Theater Districts unless I get sick of the Antiquity Sites and want to train up some Indiana Joneses.

My eyes have been opened. Culture can really dominate in ways that can overcome tech and economy. I'll be rethinking my meta-game from here on out.

Just thought it would be fun to speculate every Civ having every type of Infrastructure. I know it won't ever be added but it could be fun to brainstorm. Here are a few ideas.

Australia

Luna Park - Replaces the entertainment complex/water park. Grants an additional amenity from entertainment. When completing a wonder, in a city with a Luna Park, trigger the Bread and Circuses district project.

Australian Museum - Replaces the Archaeological museum. Each artefact stored there produces +2 Science and +1 Tourism.

Japan

Dojo - Replaces the Encampment. +1 Culture, +1 Faith. All units trained in a city with a Dojo fight as if they were full health even when damaged

Torii Gate - Can be built on coastal land/water tiles. Provides faith and culture and increases the appeal of adjacent tiles.

Those are just a couple of ideas, what else could they add?

Wilhelmina decided that it was unfair that I wasn't trading with her even though I don't even know where any of her cities are and declared war on me with 6 warrior units which surrounded my capital with only one warrior unit guarding it, only for those units to be slaughtered in 2 turns by 3 barbarians. I can just think of Wilhelmina crying in shame and frustration and throwing a tantrum as 95 turns worth of warriors just died in 2 turns, since I am in Marathon speed. (No disrespect to real life Wilhelmina, but what I just witnessed in game was truly pathetic)

[Suggestion & Discussion] Diplomatic Capital in Civ 6

While Rise & Fall went a long way towards improving CIV6's base game and development, I feel like there's still plenty of room for improvement. The World Congress' absence, as many have pointed out, is still quite conspicuous, and diplomacy in general could use expansion (though the new alliances are a definite step in the right direction).

In Rising Tide (for Beyond Earth), a resource called Diplomatic Capital was introduced. This was a rarer yield, generated from certain buildings and all wonders, and used primarily for diplomatic interaction and long-term development of your civilization through 'personality traits'. While I have not played Rising Tide myself, and can only speak for this system as it appears on paper, I feel like a purely diplomatic yield and system could go a long ways towards unifying and developing on some of the systems introduced in 6 and its expansion.

This resource, first, could potentially absorb and replace the current system of Influence for generating city-state envoys. It could be called Influence, Diplomatic Capital, or some other appropriate name. I will call it DC for short for the purposes of this post.

Generation: The first yield of DC would likely be the Palace building, or potentially the Government Plaza. The Plaza was a very interesting addition in R&F, and one that could be expanded on further, but that's outside the span of this post for now. A particular idea that occurred to me would be having this resource generated through excess loyalty, similar to excess happiness generating golden age points in Civ 5. Loyalty is a good foundation, but one I feel could be further developed; it would make sense that a strongly unified and loyal civilization could have more diplomatic clout. Excess amenities could also work here as well. And, of course, certain wonders and civ/leader abilities would be sources too.

Having it be based on loyalty and/or amenities would likely mean that tall empires would possess more of it than wide empires, as well.

Spending: There's a wide number of possibilities here; I'll go over a few individually.

Civilization Upgrades: In Rising Tide, you could develop traits for your leader by paying DC. In a similar way, having permanent bonuses able to be purchased with DC could be a good use for them. These could be things like extra policy slots, or upgrades for individual cities (adding more great work storage slots, increasing its district or housing cap, the like). City upgrades, in conjunction to what I mentioned above, would be a good buff for tall empires as well.

International Diplomacy: This is another major one, of course. To start, DC could potentially replace Influence for envoy generation as I mentioned earlier- envoys could be purchasable with DC, or reworked entirely. DC could also be used to start special agreements of some kind with other empires, or for establishing things like embassies or other infrastructure- being able to purchase units in friends' cities, for example, or using their aerodromes for your own planes. DC would also play a role in the eventual World Congress, such as using DC to purchase delegates or fund international initiatives and projects.

Other: In general, I would like to see more interaction between systems; loyalty, tourism, and religion in particular are game mechanics I feel like could be incorporated together in a fun way. DC could potentially enable that!

Lastly, something I feel like Civ6 could benefit more is comeback mechanics. While 4X is a genre focused on snowballing, I feel that systems allowing matches and other civilizations to stay competitive for longer into the game would benefit the experience overall. Diplomacy and inter-civilization interaction could be a good way to explore this. I'd love to hear other ideas and comments about this idea, and about diplomacy in Civ 6 in general. just noticed an interesting change to outback stations

They changed the visuals of outback stations slightly. Now, they're only fenced in when they're adjacent to a pasture, which makes some sense. However, pastures don't link up with them, visually, anymore. I'm wondering if that bit wasn't intentional

EDIT: Seems pastures do link up after researching steam power, but horse pastures still don't. Almost definitely bugged

Also, nowhere in the civilipedia does it mention that pastures are buffed by adjacent Stations with Steam Power and Rapid Deployment. There's gotta be a mod by now that completely rewrites the civilipedia, right? It's seriously complete ass

Ive tried googling it many times but sites only seem to have SOME of the hotkeys. For example, since I couldnt find a site that told me how to construct an archaelogical dig with my keyboard, I had to find a youtube video where somebody was starting to use archaelogists and pause at the right moment to find out how to do it (its ctrl-a by the way)

I need this really badly because one of the many mods im using is causing my actions panel to disappear, and I dont feel like spending an entire day uninstalling and reinstalling each mod one by one.

I cant build manufactories.

From Civ 6 to Civ 5

Ik this is the opposite of what people do but here's my story: I bought civ 5 the week civ 6 came out, I had just been introduced to the series and civ 6's bad reviews deterred me and I was able to get civ 5 full game for $15 cheaper than civ 6 not even deluxe game. I played civ 5 for about a 120 hours until I got compelled to buy civ 6. I have now played civ 6 for 150 hours and love it but I miss some of the features from civ 5 like world congress and massive wars. I want to play a couple civ 5 games before I completely "abandon" it. However, I completely forgot all strategies and mechanics to the game and need a refresher. What will I need to focus on and do differently from civ 6
