Gaming Trophies/Achievements

In video gaming parlance, an achievement, also sometimes known as a trophy, badge, award, stamp, medal, challenge or in game achievement, is a meta-goal defined outside a game's parameters. Unlike the in-game systems of quests, tasks, and/or levels that usually define the goals of a video game and have a direct effect on further gameplay, the management of achievements usually takes place outside the confines of the game environment and architecture. Meeting the fulfillment conditions, and receiving recognition of fulfillment by the game, is referred to as unlocking the achievement.

  • Has "trophy hunting" impacted your gaming habits compared to a decade ago? Or do you mostly ignore trophies?

  • Have you ever passed on a game completely because of difficult achievements?

  • What are some of your proudest trophies/achievements? As an example, mine is getting platinum for Catherine on the PS3.

Intel CPUs processor design flaw may cause 5% to 30% performance drops, affecting video game performances on your PC

Posted: 02 Jan 2018 03:39 PM PST

As mentioned here in this article:

https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/01/02/intel_cpu_design_flaw/

As quoted:

A fundamental design flaw in Intel's processor chips has forced a significant redesign of the Linux and Windows kernels to defang the chip-level security bug.

Programmers are scrambling to overhaul the open-source Linux kernel's virtual memory system. Meanwhile, Microsoft is expected to publicly introduce the necessary changes to its Windows operating system in an upcoming Patch Tuesday: these changes were seeded to beta testers running fast-ring Windows Insider builds in November and December.

Crucially, these updates to both Linux and Windows will incur a performance hit on Intel products. The effects are still being benchmarked, however we're looking at a ballpark figure of five to 30 per cent slow down, depending on the task and the processor model. More recent Intel chips have features – specifically, PCID – to reduce the performance hit.

So, for those who enjoyed playing video games on PCs with Intel-based CPUs, be sure to note that some of you may be one of those users who will expect to experience performance drops. Of to what extent, I don't know, your mileage may vary vastly.

Since this is related to video games, high performances on PCs, and CPUs in general, is this allowed?

What are some examples of video game marketing that actually got you to play the game?

Posted: 03 Jan 2018 06:41 AM PST

Im asking this because recently the company ArenaNet, devs for Guild Wars 2, have been experiencing some of the absolute worst advertising I have ever seen. Here's real marketing from their twitter. I want to add that the marketing team actually asked for feedback before they published these ads. The player-base told them this was terrible, gave amazing ideas, and they still went forward with it.

That got me thinking, when have I ever seen marketing that was so good that I actually grabbed the game? My most immediate memory is the classic N64 Smash Bros commercial I saw as a child. So I wanted to ask you all this question as well.
