Official r/smashbros Monthly Voted Tier List (November 2017): Results!

Posted: 11 Dec 2017 03:40 PM PST

[Insert joke about it no longer being November here]

[Insert comment about the holidays coming about here]

Is there anything I should know before I read the Tier List?

S Tiers are best, most viable characters in the game. "The Meta," if you will. They are always able to place high at tournaments, and their strengths tend to outweigh their weaknesses considerably.

A (A+/A/A-) Tiers are characters who don't define the meta, but are definitely viable and able to compete. They may possess a few noticeable flaws or lack very big strengths, but they are able to be worked around. Use of these characters will never hold the player back.

B (B+/B/B-) Tiers are characters who are able to do very well in tournament, but are held back from consistently placing high. This can be because of several flaws, very large flaws, bad match-ups, or other reasons. However, they are definitely still threats.

C (C+/C/C-) Tiers are characters who are really only good for situational or limited use. They have potential, but this potential is limited by their struggle against popular characters in the meta. They can be very useful in certain match-ups.

D Tiers are characters who are not tournament viable in any sense. They are littered with too many weaknesses to even have occasional use as a pocket. A player would be severely limited by these characters.

In terms of Miis, they are ranked with both their default and custom movesets. Default Miis are marked with a "1111," while freed custom moveset Miis are not marked. Both default and custom moveset Miis are average (guest) size and do not have any custom equipment.

What is this month's voted Tier List?

Where are the Miis?

TEXT VERSION

S Tier: Bayonetta, Cloud

A+ Tier: Diddy Kong, Sheik, Rosalina & Luma, Sonic, Fox, Zero Suit Samus

A Tier: Mario, Mewtwo, Marth

A- Tier: Ryu, Pikachu, Corrin, Luigi, Meta Knight, Lucina, Captain Falcon, Lucario

B+ Tier: Donkey Kong, Peach, Olimar, Greninja, Toon Link, Villager, Bowser, Mega Man, Lucas

B Tier: Ness, Link

B- Tier: SamusDuck Hunt, Pit, Dark Pit, Yoshi, Roy, Ike, Mr. Game & Watch, Robin, Shulk, R.O.B, Wario

C+ Tier: Little Mac, Charizard, Falco, Dr. MarioPalutena, Wii Fit Trainer

C Tier: Pac-Man, Kirby, Bowser Jr

C- Tier:Ganondorf, Zelda, King Dedede, Jigglypuff

1111 Mii Swordfighter was the only character that hit D Tier

XXXX Mii Swordfighter was placed between Bowser Jr. and Kirby in C Tier

1111 Mii Gunner was placed directly below XXXX Mii Swordfighter in C Tier

XXXX Mii Gunner was placed at the top of C+ Tier

1111 Mii Brawler was placed between Zelda and King Dedede in C- Tier

XXXX Mii Brawler was placed between Ness and Link in B Tier

Interesting things to note:

  • After having 6th place taken from him last month, Sonic rises over Zero Suit Samus to take it back.

  • Fox rises into A+ Tier, finding himself between Zero Suit Samus and Sonic.

  • Ryu falls under Marth and into A- Tier. However, he does not fall under any characters in A- Tier, keeping the Top 12 that has stood for the entire year intact.

  • After falling into B+ Tier last month, both Lucario and Captain Falcon have risen back into A- Tier, with Captain Falcon overtaking Lucario.

  • After falling into B+ Tier two months ago, Lucina rises back into A- Tier, overtaking Lucario in the process.

  • Greninja and Toon Link both see the biggest jumps in B+ Tier, both rising over Villager, Bowser, and Mega Man.

  • Lucas finds himself outside of B Tier after sitting there for a few months, now taking up the rear of B+ Tier.

  • Samus falls from the bottom of B Tier to the top of B- Tier.

  • Link decides to be a good friend and accompany Ness in B Tier after Ness was left by his former B Tier associates.

  • The gap between Pit and Dark Pit has closed once again.

  • Roy, Ike, and Mr. Game & Watch end up right next to each other in B- Tier after seeing the 3 of the 4 largest rises on the tier list (Ike went up 4 spots, Roy went up 5 spots, G&W went up 4 spots and a tier).

  • Similarly, Shulk, R.O.B, and Wario end up right next to each other in B- Tier after seeing the largest drops on the tier list (Shulk went down 3 spots, Wario went down 4 spots, R.O.B. went down 5 spots).

  • As mentioned before, B- wasn't the only tier containing the highest risers. Dr. Mario sees a comparable rise, going up four spots and jumping from the bottom of C Tier to the middle of C+ Tier.

  • Pac-Man falls from C+ Tier to the top of C Tier.

  • Bowser Jr finally escapes from C- Tier, rising into the domain formerly known as "Junior Tier."

  • /u/duckhunttoptier does not make some weird diss track anime OP amalgamation. Darn.

This usually where I'd put the data from this month's

"Funsie" Question!

but this time, I'm not going to. Don't be too disappointed; there's a method to my madness. All I'm going to say for right now is that you should keep your eyes peeled next month >:D

Your memes will be attended to soon. (courtesy of /u/DiamondJoyride)

With that, we've only got one more month left this year!

It's crazy how quickly this year has gone by, in the grand scope of things. Let's be sure to end it off with a bang next time around! I'll sure do my part.

Remember to PM me with ANY CRITIQUE OR IDEAS FOR THE MONTHLY TIER LIST! Stay fresh!

2017 is almost over. Time to look at...the year in overlays!

Posted: 11 Dec 2017 08:16 PM PST

So it's not that much of a secret that I design tournament overlays. I also sometimes tune in to tournaments and streams just to see how they look, given the wide diversity of TOs, formats and designers that Smash has. So I'm gonna ask you: What were the best (and worst) tournament overlays of 2017?

I'm gonna name a couple of the worst and best I saw this year...

Worst Overlays

Yahoo Rivalries demonstrated that their first — and unfortunately, last — foray into SSBM was accompanied by a total lack of knowledge of how to present the dean of esports. The overlay they trotted out on day one had everyone scratching their heads, with a gameplay window that was way too small (and presenting Melee in 4:3 instead of the correct 73:60) and with a lot of empty space.

To the producers' credit, the negative feedback prompted them to go back to the drawing board. By the end of the tournament, the overlay had improved substantially. In future events, my advice would have been to improve the SSBM capture and game aspect ratio, but that is not happening.

Aspect ratio concerns also dogged Canada Cup's presentation of SSBM, which was made for a 4:3 window. The design was actually sound otherwise, and it worked efficiently. The designer's unfamiliarity with Smash definitely showed, however, when they came around to Smash 4. The size of the overlay was perfect — taking obvious cues from the FGC elements — but having blue on left and red on right, the exact opposite of Smash 4's color coding (but in line with SFV and MvCi), was a big mistake. Otherwise, Canada Cup had sound overlays; their designer just needs to learn a bit more about Smash.

Ever been in a basement with a low ceiling? Afraid you'll hurt your head? That's the feeling I got just watching Austin Smash 4 when I tuned in for Austin's Really Feeling It. I'm really feeling the concussion I got from the overlay hanging down so low!

The design was generally fine for Genesis RED, but in doubles, the bright red bar far right was incredibly distracting! If you need to have a buffer there, it should be black or another color with low luminance. Melee tends to be a dark game in backgrounds, particularly with stages like Battlefield, FD and Pokémon Stadium.

MomoCon 2017 (Melee) looked like a JP design (it wasn't), but it inherited quite a few problems from the VGBC template it was inspired by. The look is overly boxy, the type somewhat hard to read (either too small or too thin), and the white background for information rather harsh. Additionally, the gameplay window is rather small, especially for Smash 4, while in Melee the black bar up top is rather thick and leaves quite a bit of unused space.

Best Overlays

Some of the best approaches were the most unconventional, and that's what PAX's Smash invitationals invariably provide. With its low-profile, small size, and docked-to-game graphics look, PAX West had one of the best looks of 2017. (Simon Saxsma's look for Hitpoint Tournaments is also excellent in this regard.)

Another big upgrade this year was VGBootCamp, which at CEO Dreamland rolled out a new template designed by JP Wilson — now of the LA Gladiators of the Overwatch League! It's a great template with plenty of options and features, though at first they used a variant with too much blank space and a small game frame for Smash 4. It definitely has some of the boxy feel of other JP designs (particularly when used like this), but full frame for 16:9 games, it looks great.

2GG also improved by leaps and bounds. The Genesis Saga overlay was questionably laid out and too tall, while too much red and poor edge spacing pockmarked the Midwest Mayhem Saga overlay and the event name was a touch too large for Civil War. In the summer, however, 2GG introduced its best template to date, whose only problem is slightly small text. Still, a HUGE improvement!

It's harder and easier to innovate in Melee than with the room afforded by Smash 4, but there were good ones this year: EvenMatchupGaming for Get on My Level and Pat's House 3 by Elliot Yang were among my personal favorites this year.

I Wanna Hear From You

Who did you think have the best/worst overlay of 2017? I ask this mostly because I like to see what people like in their Smash graphics and because as a designer, I'm always looking to incorporate that feedback into future projects. I didn't mention any of my work in 2017 here, but if you do happen to bring it up, I'd love to hear about that too.

And that's it!

100 competitors will be voted on based on the following prompt:

Consider a hypothetical tournament series that runs every weekend from July 2017 to December 2017, inclusive. The following 100 players enter the tournament every week, and at the end of the series, their relative performances are compared.

Separate these players into 10 groups based on how you would expect them to perform. All the players in a given group should be expected to have broadly similar results, wins, and losses. The groups do not need to be (and, in fact, should not be) of equal size.

10 is the highest possible score, and should be reserved for very few (or perhaps only one!) players of incredible skill and consistency.

1 is the lowest possible score.

A score of 5 or higher should correspond to players who deserve to be in the top 50. If possible, try to assign a score of 5 or higher to between 45 and 55 players.

0 is reserved for players on which you have no opinion, do not know enough about, and yourself (should you be on the list). Scores of 0 do not affect a player's final score.

Keep in mind that the PGRv4 will only feature 50 players and this survey is simply the subjective component used to determine the X-Factor.

If you're new to X-Factor, it is the difference between the objective ranking and the subjective score one receives from the survey panel.

Ex: Player A is ranked 11th but through the survey was rated as the 13th best player -- that player has an X-Factor of -2.

If you have any questions, please feel free to discuss here!

LibraRank 2017 - Smash 4's Biggest Region Ranking Project - Finalized Regions & Players Used (Update #3)

Posted: 11 Dec 2017 12:45 PM PST

Hello, all!

You may be aware of a project I've presented before. It is now officially titled, and the players to be used & the finalized regions have been selected.

I will now release more information. I will link this twice in the thread. For those familiar with the information already, here is a link to regions/players used: (Spreadsheet)

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1j7sHdrnGwAkdyS3lhjidFjtPuJYBlyHWWqknKH9cr10/edit?usp=sharing

FINALIZED REGIONS (41 TOTAL)

Italy

Austria

Switzerland

Norden (Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Iceland)

Middle East

Middle East

Japan

Kanto

Kansai

Chubu

Kyushu

Tohoku

Chugoku

Hokkaido

Ineligible

The following regions either lack Power Rankings, lack any international travel, lack active scenes, or lack a sufficient amount of noteworthy players.

South-East Asia

South Korea

Northern Canada (NT/NU/YT)

Okinawa

Shikoku

Hokuriku

I made serious attempts at Shikoku and South-East Asia but nothing really turned up on an international scale.

METHOD FOR QUALIFYING PLAYERS

Unlike the more stringent goal of OrionRank, attendance is the most necessary component of this region ranking. National tournament results - even ones that are best defined as Category 3 (equivalent B-Tier) are combed through.

In almost all cases, Power Rankings are used to comb through viable options, and attendance records/placements are looked through. As explained in the methodology post, the placements and adjustments made to tier results are how a player's score (and by extension a region's score) are finalized.

Players are penalized for not attending significant-level events via having their placement score increased and a region's final placement score is increased for every player when a region fails to reach a player count of 7.

Since scores are based on placements, the lower the score the better. See methodology page for a little bit more information.

PLAYERS USED

THIS IS A LINK TO A GOOGLE SPREADSHEET CONTAINING A LIST OF AROUND 330 PLAYERS USED FROM 41 REGIONS:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1j7sHdrnGwAkdyS3lhjidFjtPuJYBlyHWWqknKH9cr10/edit?usp=sharing

Due to the simplicity of adding/removing players from the final scores, I welcome any suggestions if I missed players. Certain regions like The Midwest have less than 10 slotted, for example, but this is because a couple of high-level regions have already had their scores finalized.

ONLINE TOURNAMENTS

I will use the following tournies as an add-on to existing tournies for players lacking in much regional information:

Naifu Wars: World War 1

Naifu Wars: World War 2

Naifu Wars: World War 3

PG Key to GENESIS

PG Key to Frostbite

PG Key to Civil War

PG Key to Midwest Mayhem 8

PG Key - September Wifi Warriors

Team Flamewave Tournament: One Year Anniversary

Final Stage 2017

This won't reflect on top players with large amounts of pre-existing tourney data -e.g., Salem, it's a useful resource to help score players like Yei and ShinyMark, both Central American players who consistently perform well. Most of these are judged as Category 3 (B-Tier) equivalent, meaning penalties for no attendance at major level events (Category 4-6) still apply.

LIBRARANK RELEASE DATE

The current projected release date is either December 18th or December 25th depending on research/scoring times. This is a total of a month delay from the original goal, but the project expanded in scope and scale since my original post.

This will be released 10 at a time (11 in the case of Day 1) over the course of 4 days during the week of release. A 5th day may be used dedicated to a full methodology release.

Hi there! Toronto TO here, I have an idea but I don't know who has the skills or servers to do it.

Posted: 11 Dec 2017 02:07 PM PST

Hey everyone! Spikezillian here. I've done tournaments for both online and offline communities in the past, and I've tried using Scoreboard Assistant and I've never been able to figure out how to get it to function properly. All this time I've straight up just used text overlayed on my scoreboard image to display my scores and while it gets the job done, it looks incredibly ugly when changing tags cause there isn't a good way to updating names without changing scenes in OBS first, and that's not something I plan on doing much of outside of between most sets. My locals are simple right now but I want more out of my scoreboard.

So here's my idea and I hope you like it. How about, instead of Scoreboard assist, we had a website that could be used as a browser-source in OBS, that would have the animations (such as scoreboards opening and closing up between scene changes), text and character images pre-set from the website using any device that connects to internet such as an iPhone, Android, tablet or PC?

And for animations we can use a crude option like using a GIF image for the scoreboard that doesn't loop when it opens up, so for example, I make a GIF of a scoreboard that just pans in from the top with the text and everything fading into the scoreboard, and once the scoreboard has opened all the way up, the gif ends and next time the scene transitions into the scoreboard scene again, it'll do that transition once more with the gif playing once.

The idea is to make it so you can update your scoreboard with your phone if you can't be at the computer immediately, but need to quickly change a tag or character picture, and makes for a silent option since not all keyboards are quiet and for someone like myself who has a small room setup with the mics right near the keyboard, the clicking of keys has been noted as annoying by players and it would be avoided with this sort of tool on my phone. Plus, as a browser-source, it can do a multitude of different things if updates were made and no one would have to update the program, as the program can be updated over time on the server rather than relying on the installer.

The only flaw I can see with this, is if wifi ends up not being a thing in a tournament setting, but this is very uncommon for tournaments, and I'm sure I wouldn't be bothered to tether my computer to my phone data if I was REALLY desperate in a wifi-less danger zone lol

So yeah, this was something I was thinking about on my way home, let me know what you think, maybe others have an improved idea on this, maybe some criticism. Fine, no problem. I do understand that it'd probably take some good servers to keep everything saved for each user but I don't really see every TO using this and I really don't think there's a BUNCH of TOs in the world compared to players. But that's my take on it.

Thank you for your time,
