Forgotten Halo Canon: Class-II Spartan-IIs, and how they've been in the franchise the whole time.

Posted: 22 Dec 2017 11:34 PM PST

One thing I'm really bugged about is how 343 just completely shoved away the fact that there's a full second class of Spartan-IIs while for the past several years more and more Class-I Spartan-IIs seemingly came back from the dead or were rehabilitated.

I want to go over what we know about Class-II and how they are not Spartan-IIIs. Hopefully 343 will dust off their place in the Halo lore and put them in some book eventually.

CANON

  • At least 2 candidates were Spartan 1.1's, children of Project Orion soldiers. One was successfully conscripted and the other wasn't. So it's likely that S-I.Is were used to fill in the gaps that were left from the original Class-II candidates getting too old for conscription.

  • Nicole-458, the Spartan in Dead of Alive 4, was also confirmed canon but her appearance in the game was not. Similar to how various characters appear in Mortal Kombat. Her service number is 458. This leads to a few possibilities. One is that the Class-II service numbers start at 151 and go onto at least 458 which gives a total of 307 candidates. Or At least 458 if the service number starts at 1 for Class-II. My guess is only a small amount, maybe a dozen or so, were trained to replace the S-IIs lost in the war at that time and projected to be lost until a potential Class-III would be trained. Plus the budget that was planned to be used on the dead S-IIs could be passed onto the new Class-II replacements. Plus we know of at least one Class-II washout, which is Yasmine Zaman.

  • The candidates were conscripted and began training in July 2537, the same month and year that Spartan-III Beta Company is conscripted.

  • For some reason Class-II underwent the same, or very similar, augmentation procedures as Class-I did which could mean that half of the candidates that were conscripted died or were deformed from the procedures. We know this is the case due to Yasmin Zaman's death. This also means that the S-III program was unknown to even the people behind Class-II otherwise they would have most likely used S-III chemical augmentation (which had been proven to be 100% successful come Beta Company.)

  • We know that Halsey wanted to train a second class of S-IIs but there were several problems such as too few number of viable candidates and a dwindling budget from both the MJOLNIR and Spartan-III program. Of course we know now that whoever was in charge of Class-II broadened the spectrum for suitable candidates as Spartan 1.1's were not apart of Class-I and are superior than the standard human/non-augmented S-III.

Why Class-II isn't actually Spartan-III Beta Company.

  • Some have speculated that Beta Company is Class-II, but only 418 candidates were trained for Beta Company versus the potential 458 for Class-II. Only 300 of the 458 graduated and most of them perished during Operation: TORPEDO with the only survivors being Tom and-B292 and Lucy-B091. However we know that Kurt lied about the numbers and more than 300 passed training since Kat and B312 were pulled out. Jonah and Roland could potentially be from Beta Company as well. If Beta Company was really Class-II then Nicole would be Nicole-B458.

  • We also know that Class-II isn't Beta Company since S-IIIs were comprised of orphans who joined on their own free will, versus all the other known Class-II candidates who we know were forcibly abducted and replaced with flash clones similar to Class-I conscription protocols.

  • As stated above, we know that all Beta Company candidates who underwent augmentation survived yet we have at least one Class-II candidate who died during augmentation.

  • Considering that S 1.1's are rare and were the suitable candidates for Class-II, it's unlikely they would have been wasted on suicide missions meant for Spartan-IIIs. That's not to say that none of the S-IIIs could have been S 1.1's.

Where Class-II can fit into the canon.

So here comes the tough part. How do you fit a whole new class of S-IIs into the canon when even S-IIIs have been so easily replaced by S-IVs and every year we get a new surviving S-II.

Well we actually have a few unknown Spartan-IIs from post 2537 lore who could very well be Class-II. Here are the numbers:

  • 75 total conscripted candidates.

  • 36 successful candidates who survived augmentation (including Kirk.)

  • 12 were washouts, 7 were fully rehabilitated (Team Black and Spirit of Fire's Red Team.) However there are another 6, who are named, who were apart of the washout group. Bringing this number up to 13. It could be possible one of them died and was later brought back, and rehabilitated to some extent.

  • 1 candidate who wasn't necessarily a washout, but was allowed to quit and then later rejoined the UNSC during the Harvest Campaign (Ralph-103.)

  • 24 died from augmentations. It would be originally 25 if one of the washouts was revived, and is 26 if you include the one candidate who committed suicide after seeing their Flash Clone.

How Class-II fits with the canon

Missing Spartan-IIs

So where does Class-II fit into the canon? They've been fitting fine in the canon for 14 years now since Halo: First Strike was released and we didn't even now it. Let me explain. In the book, along with the Fall of Reach, we find out that all available Spartan-IIs are called to Reach to defend it. Things go wrong and "most" of them end up dying. I say most because 18 died during Reach with 16 surviving up to the end of the Human-Covenant War. Now if you've been following along with the math then you'd know something's not right here. The Fall of Reach Red Team configuration has a total of 9 unnamed Spartan-IIs. If you go through the list of all living Spartan-IIs available at Reach you'd know that these 9 can't possibly be from any of them.

The Spartans of Red Team were Fred, Kelly, Joshua, Li, Anton, Grace, Will, Isaac, and Vinh. The only other surviving S-IIs would be John, Linda, Maria-062 (retired and testing Mark VI), Spirt of Fire Red Team (3), Grey Team (3), Team Black (4) and Naomi of Kilo-Five. We know that Grey Team wasn't recalled back to Reach, SoF Red Team was in cryo for a few decades. Maria was on Earth being retired and there wouldn't have been enough time to ship her back to Reach. That leaves Team Black and Naomi. In August 2552 team Black was participating in the Battle of Line Installation 1-4. We don't know the exact date but because of the timing of the events presumed to have happened after the battle, along with the Fall of Reach, it's highly unlikely they were able to make it to Reach by August 30th. It's possible Naomi could have been one of these unnamed S-IIs Let's consider that she was so the number is dropped from 9 to 8 unknown S-IIs.

Beta and Delta Red

During the Fall of Reach there were a number of Spartan-IIs present on the Pelican Bravo 001. The Pelican was shot, with the Spartans forcing to jump out of it. There were a total of 30 Spartans onboard the Pelican. Of the 30, only 18 are named. 12 are unknown Spartans. 3 die on impact, 3 are injured who are assigned to Delta Red, and then there's 6 who comprise of Beta Red. A little known easter egg from Halo: Reach is in the form of radio chatter found on the multiplayer maps which talks about the actions of Beta Red during the Fall of Reach. I won't go into specifics of their actions, only where they are now. The last mention of them is that they were fighting off Covenant while Charlie Company, Marines, were evacuating. 6 MAC rounds were hurling towards them to destroy the Covenant forces. Now typically it would make sense to kill them off this way, have 6 Spartan-IIs sacrifice themselves to defend the planet they hold most dear to themselves. Except they may still be alive. A Pelican, Iron Fist, was called to evacuated the 6 Spartan-IIs. Before the Pelican could land, it had collided with a Covenant Cruiser. However this doesn't mean they died. Radio chatter from the Pelican reads as "Go NOA, and punch it! There's still a chance we can pull Beta outta there." So clearly they weren't ramming into the cruiser, and knew there was a chance they could make it. It's been 7 years since Halo: Reach's release and we still do not have any information on the fate of Beta Red and the Pelican dropship that went to save them. Now of these 6 Spartan-IIs it's quite possible at least 4 could be from Class-I: Naomi, Leon, Robert, and August. The later three are multiplayer characters for Halo Wars 2. Like the case with Nicole, their appearance in the game is non-canon. We do know that they survived the Human-Covenant War. This increases the odds that these 4 Spartan-IIs were apart of Beta Red. That being said, there's still 8 unnamed Spartans who were in Red Team at the time of the Fall of Reach. As far as putting any additions to the canon, this would make sense for 343 make these 4 Spartans members of Beta Red.

Class-II is Beta/Delta Red and the dead Spartans.

It's extremely unlikely that these extra 8 Spartan-IIs were of rehabilitated/revived Spartans from Calss-I. IF this is true, then the Fall of Reach had both classes of Spartan-IIs fight and die side by side. We know that Nicole-458 is not one of the Spartans from the Fall of Reach. So she was not a member of Beta Red.

Numbers

So if this is all true then just how many Class-II members were trained? Itmakes perfect sense for there to be so few Class-II candidates since Class-I was so expensive. S-IIIs were meant to be a cheap replacement for S-IIs since they were so expensive. However even Ackerson couldn't deny the long term benefits of Spartan-IIs. By the time Class-II was conscripted there were a total of 6 successful candidates who were dead or MIA, with an additional 3 being MIA (Spirit of Fire.) Considering how fast they were dropping in such short time, somebody at the UNSC knew they needed replacements but couldn't order a whole entire new batch of S-IIs. So most likely projections on how many more S-IIs would die after a Class-II could be conscripted. From early 2531 to the Fall of Reach only 6 S-IIs would die or go MIA. Simulations would probably show an even higher number of simulated deaths. So my guess is that the UNSC took the funds that would be used on these dead Spartans and use them for Class-II candidates. They would use additional funds for more candidates and as Class-I numbers dwindled the budget would naturally even out. If I had to personally put a number on it, I'd say a total of 30-40 candidates of a pool of a few hundred were conscripted, with 15-20 surviving the augmentation proceedures. Of course a few would die by the time the Fall of Reach occured with only 9 being present for Reach. It's likely that of the 11 maximum candidates to survive augmentations that a few would die, the others would be recalled to Earth to protect it during the events of the Fall of Reach. It would make sense that you have some S-IIs stationed on Earth to protect it at all times and or doing ops that are relatively close to the Sol System.

Dates

Here's an interesting tidbit I just found out. First Strike, which gave us these unnamed Spartan-IIs, was released in 2003. The 'i love bees' campaign came out the next year with the launch of Halo 2. Part of me wants to think that this was sort of planned for these unnamed Spartans to be listed as Class-II. We wouldn't hear anything on Class-II again until Dead or Alive 4 came out with Nicole-458, with tidbits of her canon tying directly into the 'i love bees' campaign. Of which because of this I doubt that Team Ninja knew about all of this extra info on the canon and were provided it by Bungie at the time. So somebody at Bungie loved Class-II enough for the fans to get at least one some love.

Conclusion

If you didn't want to read this mess then I'll sum it up. There's at least 8 unnamed Spartan-IIs present at the Fall of Reach. Class-II is canon, and it's highly likely these 8 were new Class-I Spartans who either survived augmentation or were revived and then rehabilitated. I hope eventually 343 visits the Class-II program. I personally find the S-IIs to be far more interesting then S-IVs. Plus I'd love to know what kind of interaction each of the two classes had with each other.

Gotta say, this game was fucking amazing. Best Halo campaign yet. Knowing that this was Bungie's last hurrah is kind of bittersweet. Shame it took my almost 7 years to play this game. For a 360 game, it still holds up graphics wise today (played on XBone). Here's hoping Halo 6(?) can capture the same magic as this game.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection and ODST, Reach etc...

Posted: 22 Dec 2017 06:59 PM PST

Hello, I'm picking up an Xbox one s 500gb in a few days because I want to replay the Halo games. I know the Master Chief Collection consists of Halo CE, Halo 2, Halo 3, and Halo 4, but do games like ODST and Reach work for the Master Chief Collection? If so, do I have to buy Halo ODST/Reach for the Xbox 360? Because as far as I'm aware, they were never released on Xbox one.

Thanks in advance!

Will Halo return to being M-rated once the Flood returns?

Posted: 22 Dec 2017 08:10 AM PST

Halo has really been a T-rated series, aside from the Flood. The ESRB was going to give Halo: CE a T-rating until they came across the Flood, bumping it up to an M. Halo 2 and Halo 3 also got an M-rating due to the Flood, but the weird thing is Halo 3: ODST and Halo: Reach. Those 2 games didn't have the Flood, so the gore/violence wasn't as bad, but they also got an M. Halo 4 I get, the scene with the Composer is pretty hardcore with the intense imagery and violence. But aside from that scene, it should've gotten a T rating. Do you think once the Flood returns, Halo will once again be M-rated?

The perfect halo game (first post) :-)

Posted: 22 Dec 2017 01:33 PM PST

• A Great detailed story that doesn't feel rushed with story expansions like HW2.

• full armor customizations with attachments (like reach) paint style, metallic, matte, shipped or dirty.

•Choice of under suit (black, colored or specialized like Osiris)

• playable elites male and female (just in unranked social playlists.)

• a better version of spartan ops where we play with our Spartans but it should be paid dlc to fund it. Something like h3 odst mixed with spartan ops that has multiple objectives with boss battles open environments with a few space battles thrown in.

• Ai in forge

• classic firefight and custom firefight like reach.

• space battles

• no sprint (faster base movement speed) maybe thruster, no spartan charge, ground pound maybe, and clamber maybe. All abilities should be able to be toggled on and off in custom games to give more options but the base abilities should be classic in the main game.

• custom game browser, forge, a working theater and all game modes including BTB with DEV MAPS on day one!

• this is a long shot that won't happen but just some wishful thinking, a bigger warzone mode with more players. You score by holding more territory (I think dominion). Give us the ability to upgrade bases with auto turrets, as our req levels go up we get anti air and anti vehicle turrets and fortify the base. If possible we could have the ability to spawn in minions like odst marines grunts and jackals we could give commands to like attack drive a vehicle, be the gunner, hold position or follow.

I was also thinking something like abilities we unlock in some kind of skill tree after you choose a class. For example medic gives themselves and nearby allies shield regeneration (with a cool down of course) level two could be lowered cool down times and level 3 could be a bubble shield that regenerates shields of the inside occupants etc. Maybe a speed class with enhanced base speeds and reloading every level maybe one that gives you double jump with the higher level giving you jet pack like jumps. ALL OF THIS SHOULD ONLY BE IN THIS ONE WARZONE MODE OR CUSTOM GAMES, THIS A MODE TO FOOL AROUND AND HAVE FUN IN.

I post this in another thread but went into more detail here since that was a older thread.

I have to pay extra to see the Easter eggs?! I won't be surprised if I have to log in to my Rooster Teeth account to see that Easter egg in halo 3. :(

Did they just stop making cool REQ packs that you could buy for 100,000-200,000 points? I've been saving my points for one for like 6 months now and there hasn't been one

Basically title. While everyone is pissed at Bungie for their Christmas bullshit, look at Microsoft and 343.. 2 really cool REQ packs that are locked behind a hard paywall. Is there no point to me saving my REQ points? Or will they ever release another cool pack worth buying for 100,000? It just seems like they are going the cash only route now.
