Coach Crunch on lame tactics and player hate

Posted: 01 May 2017 10:26 AM PDT

For those who didn't watch, in the last game of DH:Austin hbox won the tourney by timing out chu through defensive play and ledge camping.

As usual when the type of melee people don't like to see happens, there are a lot of attacks online towards the player. This type of thing happens a lot to various players from m2k, to wizzy, to hbox, to any wobbling ICs.

Players will always do whatever is allowed within the rules to win, specially when there's a lot of money and a tourney on the line. Attacking the players isn't only hurtful, it's also woefully unproductive. Rudeness aside, that's probably what frustrates me most; It doesn't accomplish anything positive. Pretty much never will insulting a player change the way they play.

Instead, channel the salt into something productive.

If you want to change the gameplay, then try to change the rules to encourage different gameplay. We've done this many times before and it's something that happens in all sports. The shot clock in basketball comes to mind.

If you hate seeing ledge camping, advocate for a ledge grab limit. If you hate wobbling, then don't insult the ICs, talk to people and make posts and polls to discuss wobbling. If you hate seeing 30 seconds go by on pokemon with absolutely nothing happening, then talk about banning pokemon or using no transformations pokemon.

Polls btw are an effective way to get change in the community. Mid set coaching was allowed, then discussions and polls happened. The community's voices were heard, it got banned, and that was that.

So discuss!

TLDR. You can't change the players but you can change the rules.

Stay classy reddit.

Dreamhack Austin, Chudat's road to Grands, and the impact of reseeding Armada's #1 Seed

Posted: 01 May 2017 04:07 PM PDT

TL;DR: Reseeding the bracket statistically puts Chudat in losers after losing to Wizzrobe in WBR1. If we move forward statistically on all matches that impact Chudat's run, as well as ignore the unfavorable statistics on all of Chudat's matches, his road to Grand Finals would be as follows: Chudat beats Hugs, Westballz, S2J/SFAT, Mango, Leffen/Plup, and then m2k to be sitting in Grand Finals against Hbox.

Hey there! After watching the Hungrybox vs Chudat Grand Final, I was left curious at an alternative outcome. This outcome has to do with the hypothetical reseeding of seeds #1-32 after Armada dropped out of singles. I am not the most qualified or most knowledgeable when it comes to seeds, so please correct me if you see something out of place! The purpose of this hypothetical reseed is to outline what could have been Chudat's bracket if things had been appropriately seeded. Before you criticize, I would ask that you read the last paragraph. Just a heads up, this is probably going to be long.

A couple of things very important things to note about this reseed:

  1. The seeds listed here for Winners Top 24 exclude upsets in the WBF of pools unless I find adequate reason to believe the lower seed would upset the higher seed.

  2. This hypothetical bracket will also only pick up at Losers Top 24, excluding any potential upsets from the #33+ seed in losers. In short, Top 24 will end up being seeds #1-24. The reason for this is because the only person seeded #25+ that made Losers Top 24 was SFOP, the player that took Armada's spot in WR1.

  3. Because I don't know the seeding past #32, we are going to call the #32 seed "MemeLord" and assume that MemeLord loses two consecutive sets. Crazy assumption, but yeah.

  4. All stats for head-to-head matchups are from the beginning of 2016 until now, excluding sets from DH Austin itself, courtesy of Tafostats.

  5. This is hypothetical. Melee brackets can often be volatile and hard to predict. This is not a perfect prediction of the outcome of reseeding the bracket. These are only my thoughts and opinions.

  6. WR1 in the bracket I made is WBF of each of the pools. This would make WBR2 the real WBR1, but that extra round is needed to ensure the losers bracket is in order. I hope to clarify what round each round is by including Top 24, Top 8, etc.

With that, here is the current reseeding of the top 32. This formatting allows you to see which player is in Winners Top 24 (bold) and which player is in Losers Top 32. Potential upsets and important matches will be noted.

(1) Hbox vs (32) MemeLord

(2) m2k vs (31) Iceman

(3) Leffen vs (30) uuaa

(4) Mango vs (29) NY Joey

(5) Plup vs (28) Toph

(6) SFAT vs (27) Ken

(7) Axe vs (26) Tafokints

(8) ChuDat vs (25) Uncle Mojo

(9) Wizzrobe vs (24) Android [Note #1]

(10) Westballz vs (23) Santiago [Note #2]

(11) Duck vs (22) Chillindude

(12) S2J vs (21) Gahtzu

(13) n0ne vs (20) Laudandus

(14) Shroomed vs (19) Crush

(15) MikeHaze vs (18) MacD

(16) Syrox vs (17) HugS [Note #3]

[Note #1] - Though some would question how cut-and-dry Wizzy beating Android would be, I am not one of those people. Considering Wizzy's strong showings against Sheiks around Android's skill level (2016: 1-0 on KirbyKaze, 1-0 on Laudandus, 1-0 on Overtriforce) and some decent showings against the top Sheiks, I believe that Wizzy would win against Android at this tournament.

[Note #2] - It's pretty far removed, but this match is important to our hypothetical. I just wanted to comment that this match is a toss-up. Santi has given Wes some trouble in the past, but I feel confident in Wes's ability to deal with his Sheik problem at this current moment. For the sake of this hypothetical, let's assume that the higher ranked player, Westballz, pulls out the win.

[Note #3] - This match is pre-WR1 as they would be in the same pool, so I wanted to note this here. The winner of this match comes into play later on in Chu's bracket. To avoid recency bias, we have to acknowledge that Hugs is up 3-1 in sets against Syrox. Reason leads me to believe that Hugs would win this match, so let's run with that.

With all that being said, let's dig into Chu's new bracket. You can find the bracket I've used here: http://challonge.com/DHAMeleeReseed

Winners Round 2 (T24): Axe vs Westballz - With how the bracket works in our hypothetical, this matchup is notable for later on. Keep in mind that the winner of this match is relevant because their next matchup is against m2k. The person who loses to m2k after Mike Haze (apologies homie) is relevant to Chu's bracket. Seeing as Wes is up 5-0 on Axe in 2016, it feels reasonable to put him down as winning this matchup, but losing to m2k. The result of this is made clear later on.

Winners Round 2 (T24): Chudat vs Wizzrobe - In total, Chu and Wizzy have played four sets, all of which have been in 2016/2017. Wizzy is currently up 3-1. In their first two sets (Pound 2016 & TBH6), Wizzy won (2-0, 3-2). Chu then took the next set at G4, winning 3-1. Finally, at Smash Rivalries, Wizzy took their last set 3-0. Again, avoiding a recency bias which would still favor Wizzy, I believe that Wizzy would win this WR1 match. This would then send Chudat to Losers R3 of Top 24 to face the winner of Hugs/Chillin (lul memes).

Losers Round 2 (T24): Hugs vs Chillin - I personally believe that Hugs would beat Chillin in their G3 rematch. Feel free to discuss what you think in the comments. Even if Chillin were to beat Hugs, it's hard to predict the Chu/Chillin matchup considering they've only ever met in tournament once (Chu 2-0'd Chillin, S@X) and how often they play against one another. If Chillin were to beat Hugs, I would still favor Chu due to his recent form. As you'll see, it doesn't matter who wins between Hugs and Chillin

Losers Round 3 (T16): Chudat vs Hugs - I personally believe Hugs beats Chillin. With this, another meme match is set in place. Despite Samus being an unfavorable matchup for ICs, I still would bet my money on Chu. Considering his record on Hugs being 1-0 in 2016 as well as his recent form, I believe Chu would take this match. It must be noted, Hugs has been improving a ton as of late as well, pushing himself quite a bit. I don't think this would be a blowout, by any means.

Losers Round 4 (T12): Chudat vs Westballz - This one feels hard to say. These two have met three times in 2016, but all three times at the same tournament. Each set was best-of-three. Wes won their first match in WF 2-0 with Fox. Then, he lost to Chu 0-2 in GF Set #1 while using DK and Falcon. Finally, he lost again 1-2 in GF Set #2 while using Fox in a last-stock situation where Chu had a 100% lead on Weston's counterpick. It was followed by a pretty solid =D7 if you were wondering. With all that being said, this match is really hard to say who would win. For the sake of pushing this hypothetical to its maximum, let's put Chu through to LBR5.

Losers Round 5 (T8): Chudat vs SFAT/Leffen/S2J - This is where it gets really difficult to predict how things go. I'm going to keep it short with bullet points.

  • The loser of SFAT/Leffen plays the winner of S2J/Laudandus. I personally believe S2J would edge out Laudandus.

  • It's a Leffen favored match between him and SFAT (Leffen up 4-0 in '16 but down 0-1 in '17)

  • If Leffen loses to SFAT, I believe Leffen would beat S2J (1-0 in '16)

  • If SFAT loses to Leffen, I believe it's a toss up between S2J and SFAT (SFAT up 6-1 in '16 but down 1-2 in '17)

  • If Leffen plays Chu, I firmly believe Leffen wins (Leffen up 1-0 in '17, only set)

  • If SFAT plays Chu, I believe it's a toss up (2-2 in '16/'17)

  • If S2J plays Chu, I believe Chu wins (Chu up 1-0 in '17)

With all that being said, I personally think that the most likely outcome is that Leffen beats SFAT, then SFAT beats s2j. Again, for the sake of our hypothetical, let's assume that Chu beats SFAT in their toss up. On to LBR6.

Losers Round 6 (T6): Chudat vs Hbox/Mango/Plup/Wizzy - This is the trickiest part that is filled with the most "what if" type of matchups. For the sake of time and space, we are going to bluntly and blindly follow the stats from '16/'17. Bullet points necessary once again.

  • Chu plays the loser of the #1 seed's Winners Semis

  • The Winners Quarters feeding into the #1 seed's Semis could both go either way: Hbox/Wizzy & Mango/Plup

  • Over the course of '16/'17, Hbox and Wizzy are even in sets (3-3). Statistically, Hbox is more likely to beat Wizzy (10-9 favored game count for Hbox), though it is very slightly favored towards Hbox. We will assume Hbox beats Wizzy here.

  • Over the course of '16/'17, Mango is up 6-2 in sets over Plup. Statistically, Mango is more likely to beat Plup. We will assume Mango beats Plup here.

  • Over the course of '16/'17, Hbox is up 11-10 in sets over Mango. This matchup is difficult to say considering results solely from '17 favor Mango, but statistically Hbox is more likely to beat Mango. We will assume Hbox beats Mango here. As you will see, this statistical assumption favors Chu.

With these resulting statistical assumptions, Chu would be set to play Mango in LBR6. Statistically, Mango is Chu's best matchup out of the four potential losers of the first Winners Semis (Hbox up 2-0, Wizzy up 3-1, Plup up 1-0). Obviously this is very hard to predict correctly with all these toss-up matchups. If Plup beats Mango in Quarters, then Mango is on the other side of the bracket and would likely play Leffen instead of Chu. If Wizzy beats Hbox, then the winner of Mango/Plup would statistically be sitting in Winners Finals. If Mango beat Hbox in Semis, then Chu would be playing against Hbox in LBR6. With all the ifs considered and all the ifs playing in favor of Chu, we will assume that his matchup with Mango would play out the same. Chu beats Mango and moves on to Losers Semis.

Losers Semi-Final (T4): Chu vs Leffen/Plup - On the other side of the bracket, Leffen and Plup are likely to play each other for a spot in Losers Semi's. Though there is an argument to made that Leffen could beat m2k, let's assume things played out between those two the same in this bracket as they did this weekend. Moving forward, Leffen and Plup are tied in sets during '16/'17 (1-1) but the game count slightly favors Plup (4-3). For the sake of this matchup, we are not going to choose Leffen or Plup beating the other. The reason for this is because both Leffen and Plup are up 1-0 on Chu, both of whom beat Chu 3-1. It's fair to say that with the stats we have, Leffen and Plup are evenly matched in regards to their matchup against Chu. Though for the sake of this hypothetical bracket, we are going to assume that Chu upsets either Leffen or Plup for the first time ever in order to move on to the LBF.

Losers Final (T3): Chu vs Hbox/m2k - Statistically, Hbox is more likely to beat m2k in the WBF. Hbox is up 5-3 in sets against m2k, though the most recent result favors m2k. Despite this recency bias, I believe that Hbox would recreate his win in this tournament and send m2k to the LBF. Following that trend of recreating the same results, we now have Chu beating m2k in the LBF.

And there you have it, a potential and hypothetical reseeded bracket that results in Chudat in the Grand Final. If we are to strictly follow statistics in WBR1, Wizzy would send Chudat to the Losers Bracket. From here, strictly ignoring all statistics not in favor of Chudat, he would need to beat Hugs, Westballz, S2J/SFAT, Mango, Leffen/Plup, and then m2k to be sitting in GF against Hbox.

I personally believe that this is the likely outcome of a reseeded bracket, but there is a ridiculous number of potential brackets. Perhaps Chudat beats Wizzy, but loses to Hbox. This would statistically result in Chudat needing to beat Axe, Plup, Leffen, Mango, then m2k for a spot in the GF. Or perhaps Chudat goes the route of beating Wizzy, Hbox, Mango/Plup, then m2k/Leffen and is sitting in Grand Finals on Winners side.

Who knows what could have happened if the bracket was properly reseeded. I definitely don't. I'm not a psychic or anything. But I do believe that if the bracket was reseeded, Chudat would have had a significantly tougher road to Grands than he did. And let me finish by saying, this is not about whether or not Chu cheesed anyone out with ICs, is capable of beating top players, or deserved his spot in Grands. Not at all. This hypothetical is about the importance and integrity of seeding tournaments and what is on the line with proper seeding. Properly reseeding this tournament has a drastic impact on more brackets than just Chu's. M2k is one of those brackets, but feel free to look at the bracket and see just how different things statistically could've panned out.

Thanks for reading. I apologize for how lengthy this is. Maybe this isn't worth the time it took to type, but maybe it is. At the very least, I hope this sparks some discussion. =D7

Here are a couple of clips I managed to grab quickly. All taken in 20XX 4.06 in Dolphin at 3x native resolution.

I mean...

Look at this shit right here.

Just... Ugh.

Great job Achilles and everyone else who worked on the sweet new stages! Thanks for all your hard work.

How Can I Deal with Players Who Exhibit Uncontrollable Rage at My Own Weekly?

Posted: 01 May 2017 11:16 AM PDT

So I host weekly tournaments. One of the regulars will often yell and throw his controller when he loses. It normally starts off with him laughing about losing but it quickly takes a turn for the worst as he begins to john. Then, when he finally loses he will rage, throw a controller and slam the door as he leaves the venue. Sometimes he'll come back in and calm down, other times he just leaves for the night. Most of the other regulars will ignore it but I can tell it makes people feel awkward. We all also joke about it and he does too but the issue is that as we get closer to the summer, our events will start to get a lot more entrants and I don't want players avoiding our events because of it.

Things I've tried
* Talking to him about it
* Threatening to not let him enter events if he keeps it up
* This normally works for a bit but things will always go back to normal

Any suggestions from the community would be greatly appreciated.

Beijing Smash 4, Melee, and 64 Spring 2017 Power Rankings

Posted: 01 May 2017 04:17 PM PDT

Check out our PRs from January through April! We're small but we have weeklies for Smash 4 and monthlies for Melee and 64, with a lot of cross-participation between games.

http://imgur.com/a/bANga

Huevos has stayed on top of Smash 4 since our last PR, but Ma-kun has managed to climb to 2nd in Smash 4, 1st in 64 and 5th in melee as a solo Link!

Other honorable mentions:

  • SneaKen surged up the rankings and has taken wins from everyone other than Huevos.
  • Rez almost took a tournament despite devoting 95% of his gaming time to SF5 and RASHIIIDOOOOOOO
  • Beijing emerged victorious in Smash 4 crews and doubles, Melee singles and 64 singles vs. Shanghai at SMASH DYNASTY II at the end of March, but Shanghai won Smash 4 singles.

One of the most memorable moments at the Smash 64 major, Lets Go, involved a 12 year old player named Qapples and his run from D4 to D2.

Posted: 01 May 2017 08:35 AM PDT

His dad's text:

https://twitter.com/MrSir64/status/858865817664049153

He placed 2nd to last in his placement pool losing 4/5 matches and was sent to the last division (4th) in the tournament due to the new Waterfall tournament format. This makes it quite hard to advance as he needed to win many sets to get up to D1 but wasn't impossible. Over the span of the day, he upset his seeding and won significant matches and advanced all the way up to division 2 where he finally placed 65th. Something no one expected.

Though what mattered to me the most was the support from our Northern Virginia scene and the rest of the Smash 64 community cheering him on while his parents were watching. It was an amazing experience. His dad texted me later that day to thank me and our community for making that day one of the best days in his life. Always good to see the community unify over moments like this.

Sup, it's dB | Wisely,

Tomorrow I'm talking with Shiny Zubat and burntsocks about Yoshi! If you have any questions for either of them, post in the comments and I'll choose a few for the live interview. Wondering about parrying in PM? Want to hear about Yoshi's ridiculous egg tosses? Send some questions our way, and we'll let you know!

You ever tune into a stream and hear, "Uhhh. I dunno Lucario. He's probably canceling some stuff right now..."? Yeah, that sucks, and I get it. Time to fix that, one character at a time.

In the end, we'll have a playlist full of talks from top players about what they find hype about their character. Maybe not a "How-To-Play 101", but for viewers or commentators figuring out what to get excited about, it's exactly we need.

They'll all be interviewed live on Down B Collaborations' Hitbox, and then posted to our YouTube! See you all tomorrow!
