Melee Characters as Chess Openings

Posted: 07 Feb 2017 08:50 AM PST

This is without a doubt the nerdiest thing I've ever done. I know this will probably only be interesting to the chess players in our community, but here goes anyways. These are my thoughts on "What is the chess opening equivalent to each melee character?" In chess, the opening consists of the first few moves, and just about every possible combination has been played thousands of times. Each set of moves has a name, usually named after a country or a player.

Fox: The Sicilian (e4 c5) The Sicilian is easily the most potent weapon in all of chess, but like Fox, you have to REALLY know what you're doing because EVERYONE knows the Sicilian/ has Fox practice.

Marth: The Spanish (e4 e5 nf3 nc6 bb5) Another top tier opening that's been popular since day one. A bit easier to learn than the Sicilian, so it's good for beginners as well as pros.

Falco: The King's Gambit (e4 e5 f4) Extremely aggressive, glass cannon opening. Has the potential for fireworks on either side of the board. Like Falco, this opening has not been terribly popular/successful as of late (save us PP!).

Sheik: The Four Knights (e4 e5 nf3 nc6 nc3 nf6) A great opening for beginners. Heavy on fundamentals and, like Sheik, a good recommendation for a newer player.

Puff: The London System (d4 bf4 e3 nf3) (black's moves are irrelevant) Everyone hates the London System, and wish they could avoid it. Unfortunately, due to the nature of the opening, you are FORCED to play into their game/style.

Peach: Caro Kann (originally King's Indian, but Caro fits better) (e4 c6) An extremely solid defense based around the idea of letting your opponents over extend themselves into your "wall". Seen at the top level but not super often.

Ice Climbers: The Russian (e4 e5 nf3 nf6) Can be somewhat boring, but the Russian Defense is ridden with deadly traps (wobbles).

Captain Falcon: Evan's Gambit (e4 e5 nf3 nc6 bc4 bc5 b4) This is a balls to the wall chess opening, which saw lots of success in chess' golden days (Paul Morphy) (Isai). A fan favorite for sure.

Samus: The French (e4 e6) A thorn in the side to many a chess player, the French is very solid and you can usually expect a long game.

Pikachu: Dutch Defense (d4 f5) The "poor man's Sicilian" (Fox) lol.

Luigi: The Halloween Gambit (e4 e5 nf3 nc6 nc3 nf6 nxe5) Goofy as all hell, and not particularly good, but one of the most fun openings in existence.

Young Link: (shoutouts u/Bobsagetasaur) The Scotch (e4 e5 nf3 nc6 d4) An opening that hasn't seen a lot of action at the top level lately, but a few years ago, the reigning GOAT Kasparov (Armada) pulled it out at the top level to the surprise of many.

Link: Ponziani Opening (e4 e5 nf3 nc6 c3) Was considered pretty good at the very beginning, but people soon figured it out and is now not popular for either beginners or experts. (thanks u/tactician_mark)

Mewtwo: Scandinavian (e4 d5) (thanks u/confusedpork!) Not a great opening in general but one can achieve surprisingly good results against unfamiliar opponents.

Gannondorf: Scholar's Mate (e4 e5 Qh5) Popular amongst 3rd graders. Great for cheesing noobs.

Bowser: Rook Pawn Opening (h4) You literally have never played chess before and something in your head told you this would be a good idea, prepare to get wrecked.

Kirby (edited): BongCloud Opening (e4 e5 Ke2) Put down the controller dawg.

I hope this was enjoyable or at least mildly interesting to anyone besides me. In all seriousness though, picking up chess can only make your smash skills better, for obvious reasons. Happy Smashin (and maybe try to learn some chess too? idk).

EDIT: GOLD: Thanks so much! EDIT 2: Wow, really didn't expect there to be a THOUSAND chess playing smashers. Yall made my week. Maybe a chess + smash tournament could be a thing in the future?

Can someone explain what hit Shulk here? I've tried to replicate it and I can't. He appears to take 25% from nothing. Could it be the fabled ghost car? Regular cars only do 20 percent.

Momocon is at the end of may, and you should be getting your tickets to it before they go up further in price!

Momocon is a gaming and anime convention with events such as Smash 4, Melee, Street Fighter V, Pokken, Blazblue, and more!

We already have big names coming out to it alongside a large $5k pot bonus! This is not an event you want to miss.

Signing up for tournaments: https://smash.gg/tournament/momocon-2017-1/details

Registration/Buying Badges: http://www.momocon.com/momocon-2017-registration/

Having been to this event before, alongside friendlies going on during the day and until the late hours of the night, there is now large top player representation and I wanted to spread the word about the event! Last year we had HUGE upsets, where BigLou almost beat Mr E, Lord Mix beat void once and Vinnie twice, Wrath beat ally, and it was such a great, chill event.

Sources on players coming:

Zero, Nairo, ANTi (Facebook)

Abadango (Twitter)

Wizzrobe, DJ Nintendo, Fatality (Already registered)

[Discussion] The Scar and Toph Show: SEASON 3 EPISODE 10 - The People's Episode 2 (Ft. Major Duncan, NFreak, and Alexy)

Posted: 07 Feb 2017 09:28 AM PST

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lH2OxTa5KTA

SUP WITH IT!

Today's episode is a little different from the usual. Once The Big House 6 was announced, we decided to open up three slots for guest appearances on the show on the Compendium. What you see today is the three wonderful people that decided to support that tournament and come on the show! We really lucked out too, because all three of these guys have some interesting lives.

From making custom controllers to video production to playing in a symphony, these are the people that make this community unique. Each person has a unique perspective to share and we love hearing their thoughts on what's been going on recently in Melee. With our situation with EVO 2017 fresh on everyone's minds, we discuss what the implications of a Saturday finals are. Blur even pops in to share his two cents as well!

Last night was a big night in Melee history. The dawn of a new era is upon us, as Bobby reveals his new character: SCAR FOX. Bobby is learning what fun truly is: pushing a lot of buttons very quickly. No need to worry though; the resident Fox ditto master at Twitch steps in to show him what it's like to live life as a Fox main :3 In addition, we also get a vintage rant from the Snap Master as Scar breaks down just how much he has put into playing Brave Exvius and how it all was for nothing since Fire Emblem: Heroes ended up being the popular game LOL

As always, we'd like to thank you all for watching the show and give a special shoutout to Alexy, Major Duncan, and NFreak for joining us last night! Make sure to give them all a follow on Twitter (links in the YouTube description). If you want to help them out, you can check out the Reno Video Game Symphony (Alexy), watch some Alpharad videos (Major Duncan), and check out Mute City Customs (NFreak)! We'd love to hear your thoughts on this episode and what we can do to make any future compendium episodes even better. We always keep track of these threads or, if you prefer, you can tweet at the show too (https://twitter.com/ScarTophShow)! Next episode we'll be going back on track to our usual format, so we'll see you there!

Biggest chokes of 2016?

Posted: 07 Feb 2017 05:10 AM PST

Another year of Melee, many sets, many close sets. Some where in a slightly different universe the victor is different.

Choking away wins is a pretty common thing, what do you think were some examples of this in 2016?

It's cool to think about how many things could of been so different.
