DayZ - The idea that DayZ was built to fund ArmA4 makes no sense.

The idea that DayZ was built to fund ArmA4 makes no sense.

Had a very long discussion on this one that's buried miles deep, but felt this was a scenario worthy of discussion on it's own.

The figures don't entirely stack up: DayZ had sold 3 million units by January 2015, a million more than Arma 3 at the time. For all intents and purposes, it was DayZ that was driving the business forward, with years now ahead to trickle in PC sales now they knew they were building a new engine, and the potential of console sales at the tailend to sweeten the deal. They now had something around 30+/-10% million euros nett slushing around in the name of DayZ (after sales, steam taxes, assuming Rocket walked with 10% + few 100k and that corporate tax was paid at the lower reinvestment rate). DayZ was still selling well and the consistent downward trend from release probably wasn't yet alarming, given how little content was present to keep people engaged and how much bigger the bubble was than initially anticipated.

Meanwhile Arma 3 sold for more than twice the price of DayZ at retail: Hackily adjusting for the fact that many people will have bought on sale by assuming an averaged price of 40 euroes between it's retail and frequent 35% discount prices, that's a gross of 80m euroes or around 50+/-10% million euros nett to January 2015. There was still plenty of DLC to come, so the gameplay team(s) had work within RV4 to be getting on with between that, assigned bugs and as with all tech jobs the endless self improvement required just to stay relevant, whilst the C++ guys were getting down to work on theirs and of course work on Enfusion, as it's an industry where many hats are worn.

It's entirely feasible that a huge chunk of that extra revenue from Arma3 - and from the point where we've stopped this story, Arma3 stomps ahead in terms of revenue - was reinvested into Enfusion. If it was, you can bet your bottom dollar that there's merit in the idea that some of the delays in developing Enfusion were a result of extensions made to Enfusion thanks to funds provided by Arma3 sales.

However, that's a million miles away from the narrative being pushed: The first reference to Arma4 being in development from Nov 2016 is speculation from this thread, where the cited article (Slovakian) makes unsourced (but not unreasonable) claims that they were recruiting a C++ programmer for the now in development Arma4. Consider this; given that the rumour didn't surface for a while after that, what if the source had got it's wires crossed and in fact that developer was intended for DayZ and Enfusion (or Arma 3, but tasked to aid the development of Enfusion?), and it was this staffing problem and the inevitable retraining that exacerbated the delays?

Until the project is finished, NDAs expire and those close to the project can begin to talk, it's all pure (but juicy!) speculation from every side. Perhaps we'll never know what really happened for things to fall so far behind and for so much of the faith from the community to have been lost.

If someone forces feeds you an apple. vs you just eating the apple normally, do you receive the same benefits?

I was thinking it could be a useful strat, if playing a duo or group, to force feed each other to go through food quicker, because force feeding is almost instant

When will this game be finished?

Posted: 23 Feb 2018 06:38 PM PST

I've never played DayZ, but I know it's been in alpha for quite some time. Are the devs even working on the game anymore? If yes, what is their current estimate of the actual release date?

Painting a weapon destroys the magazine?

Posted: 23 Feb 2018 09:21 AM PST

I had found a Sporter 22 with a 30 Round Magazine attached to it, and I loaded it up with ammunition. I found a black spray paint canister, and proceeded to paint my newly found rifle. I had checked right afterward and the magazine had disappeared from the weapon, and my inventory! It was nowhere to be found on the floor around the area where it happened either.

I had also found a 10 round .22 magazine, and tried to attach that to my rifle with no success. Is this a bug? Or is this something that's been known for a while? New to me, at least!
