/r/Civ Weekly Questions Thread - August 13, 2018

Posted: 13 Aug 2018 03:15 AM PDT

Greetings r/Civ.

Welcome to the Weekly Questions thread. Got any questions you've been keeping in your chest? Need some advice from more seasoned players? Conversely, do you have in-game knowledge that might help your peers out? Then come and post in this thread. Don't be afraid to ask. Post it here no matter how silly sounding it gets.

To help avoid confusion, please state for which game you are playing.

In addition to the above, we have a few other ground rules to keep in mind when posting in this thread:

  • Be polite as much as possible. Don't be rude or vulgar to anyone.
  • Keep your questions related to the Civilization series.
  • The thread should not be used to organize multiplayer games or groups.

Finally, if you wish to read the previous Weekly Questions threads, you can now view them here.

57,000 Faith - possible Integer overrun?

57,000 Faith - possible Integer overrun?

I've just experienced a peculiar bug - suddenly, when starting a new turn I had the option to purchase 5 late game wonders i'd never seen before including the Great Western Railway, the Fuggerei, the Brooklyn Bridge and a few others. I think this might be connected to the Great People mod I'm running, but these wonders were available to purchase for -11,997 faith.
What got wierder is that this gave me that amount of faith. Somehow I'm now blessed with 57,338 faith, and almost nothing left to spend it on! Excuse me while I go and stomp to a religious victory, but it's a curious bug.

Best Civ VI Pre-Game Setups (Mods included)

Posted: 13 Aug 2018 01:05 PM PDT

Hey guys and gals,

I haven't played in Civ 6 in a minute but I've got a strong Civ itch building that NEEDS to be scratched... but the vanilla default game setups left a lot to be desired. So before I dive in again, what are your FAVORITE pre-game setups?

I'm sorry if this has been asked recently....Reddit search is un-usable.

What I learned in boating school is.....

https://i.redd.it/44ed7mh1ruf11.jpg

Things I learned during my loss (3rd full game I've played):

1) Montezuma is a psychopath (had over 2500 military strength before anyone else had 500)

2) Germany's production is straight up ridiculous if you do it correctly

3) If you go for a domination victory early, you can get basically any victory type in late game

4) AI is so scared of warmonger penalties that they will literally let another AI take over the world and not help you stop it

5) Gilgamesh is a bro if you are a bro to him

6) Playing on a higher difficulty level makes the game much more fun, I was 7 turns away from science victory as opposed to no one even being remotely close to me when I played on cheiftain

Emergency Behavior currently is obnoxious and bad design

Posted: 13 Aug 2018 07:26 PM PDT

(this is an updated, R&F game, on steam, with no active gameplay mods)

Context: In my current game I have been in 3 wars with 3 different Civs. In each of the 3 wars, there has been an emergency declared with identical parameters.

-I am the target of the emergency.

-Sole eligible participant of the 'good guys' is the Civ that I took the city from, and am still at war with

-Conditions are to re-take a city back, that I took from them

The reason that this is obnoxious is due to what it does to peace conditions. THE AI WILL NEVER SETTLE FOR PEACE WHEN THERE IS AN ACTIVE EMERGENCY SUCH AS THIS ONE. (to recapture their own city) What this means, is that instead of Peace treaties becoming available after 10 turns, you must either wait 30 turns for the emergency to expire, or you must wipe out the Civ completely. This is a terrible downgrade for the game-play of being a warmonger. You cannot start growing those conquered cities, or go back to peace, until you reach these much more difficult conditions.

The reason it is bad design, is that it doesn't even meet the goals of emergencies. The purpose of emergencies is to create a more active world, where Civs are more interactive, have more varied goals, and are pushed into taking sides with or against each other, and the human player is pushed to leave the dull comforts of their borders. None of this is achieved when there is only a single participant/'good guy' in the emergency. These kinds of emergencies are just an obnoxious tax on a warmongering player, that makes warmongering less satisfying. These are lame emergencies that are purely a dispute between an aggressor and a defender in an active war, WHO WERE ALREADY ANTAGONISTS, AND ALREADY AT WAR WITH EACH OTHER, and with no other Civs even roped into the conflict as as result of declaring an emergency. So as an emergency, this is completely lame and pointless. It doesn't change the relations between Civs at all.

The game needs to be improved in the way it finds emergencies to generate. Not only should there be less lame ones like these, or none at all, there should be more interesting ones. I assume this is being tinkered with all the time between game patches.

In the interim, or as a band-aid, it would be nice if the game was changed such that AIs will not be so strict about refusing peace during this kind of emergency, because this emergency is far too common during ordinary warmongering play.

Let's talk Industrial Zone strategy (I guess Water Parks and Entertainment Districts too)

Posted: 13 Aug 2018 05:39 PM PDT

When the game first came out, it was all about getting as many industrial zones as possible within the 6 tile range. But they changed it to be only the first one except with that one governed ability. What is the ideal strategy for the number of industrial zones to build? Do you only build the workshop and skip the factory and power plant since those effect multiple cities?

When I go for a science victory I build as many as possible surrounding my capital to take full advantage of the governor card to build space ship parts. But if I'm not going science, I have been experimenting with only building one industrial zone within any 6 tile radius, but there just isn't enough production to win in higher difficulties that way.

Tldr: Do you just build an industrial zone in every city or what?

Need help with making a settler mod

Posted: 13 Aug 2018 02:25 PM PDT

Hello all, I am needing some help from fellow modders in making a settler mod. I am making a settler than is available at colonialism that can travel further, see further, and cannot be captured. I also want it so when it settles a city, it starts with 3 population and a monument and a granary. I already have it so it can move further and see further, as well as I have it so it cannot be captured, but I need help with the initial population and starting buildings. Does someone know the XML to go in the data file for the mod to make that happen? Any help with this would be appreciated. Thanks!

EU4 -> Civ5, how do I play?

Posted: 13 Aug 2018 06:57 PM PDT

Hi, i'm a long time player of paradox games, and i wanted to try out Civ5 since i've had it in my library for a while.

I failed miserably in all my playthrough, I always end up with negative happiness and a deficit that forces me to disband my armies, so what should i do to improve?

Can anyone explain this BS?

Posted: 13 Aug 2018 06:54 PM PDT

So I'm attacking Eithopia as Assyria on 6 difficulty. Maybe its because I'm too late in the game, turn 252 1060 AD, but siege towers are fucking atrociously bad. On top of that, my horseman can move 1 tile at a time, a long with every fucking other unit. No mountains, and he has great wall maybe that has something to do with it. Someone please explain this nonsense

Question: Defeated player returned to the game.

Posted: 13 Aug 2018 05:10 PM PDT

So Indonesia took over Paris and I got "France has been defeated" message, many turns later I look there and Paris is with France again, is this due to the city losing loyalty ? because the city next to it was "free" but not "French", so can someone give me an explanation ? is it because it was the capital so it returns to the original owner ?
