A Scrub hits Gold

Posted: 12 Apr 2018 09:02 AM PDT

Title image I forgot to add to the title....

I've been playing SFV since launch, with a break starting just before Urien's release and coming back around about when Kolin landed. SFV is the first fighting game I've played with any real seriousness.

I have just over 600 hours and 5500~ matches played. Jumped characters a bunch (Chun-li > Alex > Guile > Juri > Kolin > Ibuki). I spent a good year while bouncing around bronze before slowly but consistently climbing silver until I hit where I am now.

It's taken a long time, and I want to encourage people who are in the same boat. While I see alot of people taking no time at all in getting to gold, For those of you who are still grinding away as best as they can. Don't give up.

I wanted to make this post to share what changes I made to my gameplan and habits leading up to my improvement, and how my improvement came very quickly after a few realizations.

  • Anti-airing WITH SPACING

This is the first point that anyone ever brings up when people ask for advice, and it's true. But it's not just a matter of mashing your AA button as best as you can. It's about your spacing and being in a position to punish a jump you are forcing your opponent to make.

  • Meaties

Practice them. With all of the players who mash on wakeup, they will win you so many games in the early ranks. Once they start blocking, time to throw, when they tech, time to shimmy.

  • Beginners Checklist

Honestly in the early ranks just having one of each of the following get you headed upwards, If you focus on these instead of certain "tricks" it will make you a better player on a fundamental level. If you do not have one of the things on the list below. Find one, asap.

  • Frame Trap -> Confirm Combo
  • Poke
  • Anti Air
  • V-Trigger combo (character specific)
  • Jump-In Combo
  • Crush Counter Combo
  • Combo into Super
  • Punish Buttons

  • Stop and Adapt

The lower levels are full of people who just keep pressing buttons. You cannot stop this. You will keep losing to them as long as you keep running into the attacks.

The best advice I have is just chill, Observe and react. They will have a pattern, they will have something they will try more than once, they will jump, they will dash. Find a pattern and punish it. Whatever you do, don't try and press buttons into the random, 9 times out of 10 you will suffer a crush counter or full combo because of it.

  • Knowing your Turn This is something that you can only really grasp with experience. But every character has a basic frame trap or special move that is safe and will bait a counter hit out of you. If there is a character you have a problem with, take it to training mode and lab a response. This is just something that you'll have to do to and it will make you a much better player for your efforts.

And here are some replays, to show you that while I'm still not great. This is the kind of play that got me out of silver.

  • vs Guile An exercise in spacing and patience.
  • vs Ryu Meaties are good.
  • vs Bison Knowing when to block is good.
  • vs Abigail And sometimes you just have to laugh at what you lose to.

Knowing my luck I'll be back in silver very soon, but I hope this has helped in someway. If not directly, then perhaps it might be encouraging for someone struggling to know that it doesn't matter how long it's taking, points don't matter. As long as you are learning as you play, you are improving.

P.S. To all you experts out there, feel free to blast my profile for the million things I could improve upon, it all helps.

How does one properly pressure?

Posted: 12 Apr 2018 05:52 AM PDT

I can "do" it with Mika, but for non-grapplers I have difficulty keeping pressure. Anyone got like a "guide" to follow? I mean I either get stuffed, DPed, or grabbed. Maybe I'm just a bit "slow" but hey.

Does anyone have problems with dropped inputs when using G-Sync?

Posted: 12 Apr 2018 08:34 AM PDT

I think I was dropping my DP a bunch last night after buying a new monitor. I'm wondering if G-Sync has issues running for SFV since the game is capped at 60fps. Anyone know more than I do about this?
