True Dota 2 - How to first pick?

How to first pick?

Posted: 25 Jan 2018 10:57 AM PST

In my games i'm almost always first pick but I usually go in with a hero I want to play. I usually pick Bounty, Tusk, or Doom. These are heroes that you can't really counter or aren't worth countering. I know in pro games they usually go for flex picks like SK, Venge, Veno, Etc. But in Archon/Legend pubs that's not quite a thing. Is there any critical thought behind the first pick in pubs or is it just preference?

How to have an impact as NP in the mid-late game when the enemy is playing the anti-split game...

Posted: 25 Jan 2018 10:00 AM PST

Just had a frustrating couple of games. I've started to get a little better with NP (https://www.dotabuff.com/players/32089486)

In both cases, the enemy team responded to my split pushing in the mid-late game. I was attempting to keep lane pressure up and participate in teamfights as much as possible, but I found that I was being very ineffective at both things...

The team seemed to be simply turtling until an opportunity came up (which was often me pushing a lane) and then responding with a gank...

Basically, I think my mistake was playing too aggressive into their defensive position...so if I'm not doing that...how do I positively affect the game when I feel I don't have the option to effectively split push?

Is this an opportunity where I should be trying to use vision to set things up?

Perhaps try and promote a rosh kill or something like that?

Or should I be trying to follow our #1 into fights instead of TPing in?

PSA: Mute your enemies and anybody who flames

Posted: 24 Jan 2018 04:50 PM PST

I've won so many games by just muting my enemy and any flamer teammates. I used to get tilted so easily by seeing "We need wards" and "ptmr :v" every game over and over but once I removed these things from my games I've been winning significantly more. Dota is a mental game. If you let your enemies or teammates discourage you, you are going to play worse. Thinking about the Sven that keeps flaming you isn't going to help you win, thinking about the game will. You need to keep your enemies down to 5 and if they're voiceless enemies that makes it even easier.

How do you deal with luna as an offlaner?

Posted: 25 Jan 2018 01:41 PM PST

This hero is just the bane of my existance, against any other carry I can win the lane or at least get good levels but not against luna. She does such a ridiculous amount of damage in the early levels, even just her + 1 support can kill anyone because the support gets like +25 damage, and her nuke cd is so low she can use it twice in quick succession. Is simple, go to lane against a luna with a support and you die or take most of your hp in damage, or at best eat a 300 dmg nuke every 6 seconds like 10 times with just an aquila for mana regen. So I am forced to leave lane or sit in trees getting no xp because lunas in my bracket are good enough and she has enough dmg to get every single deny. Can't even abuse night vision because of her passive.

I don't get it, how is she balanced? Literally every single other carry I can get something out of the lane but not luna. And I'm not even going to get into the "oh you lost one core w/o buyback and I have MoM and treads? well say goodbye to half your base.

Any offlane hero/tactic suggestions for playing vs. this shit? I have tried every offlane hero I think to no avail, and am resorting to banning her every game. The only time I win is vs. luna is when my other 2 lanes win, I just feel like I can do nothing against that hero and have no impact in the earlygame.

ancient 5 if that helps

Dealing with Position 1 Faceless Void

Posted: 24 Jan 2018 04:54 PM PST

How do you guys deal with P1 Faceless lately? He seems very powerful to me, and is one of my main problems in games lately.

It seems he has a number of builds he can go depending on his team, and its hard to beat him no matter what.

In lane, he's very tough to kill if he focuses on farming and doesn't use his Time Walk to be aggressive. His high base damage and chances to bash make denying him/out-harassing him very difficult. Any short disable/nuke can be immediately timewalked, making him seem unkillable, especially if supports are sticking around.

MoM seems to be popular on him once again. This is the main window I see for punishing him - When he's silenced and weakened from the active. However, he tends to win 1v1 manfights, so depending on the hero, this is useless.

With the P1 farm and lead in gold/exp, I find that he has an easy time being both powerful and survivable, and being Void, he doesn't mind initiating for his team. Even 2 in a Chrono can really turn a teamfight in his favor. I've seen a lot of Aghs pickups lately, too, and they make teamfighting a NIGHTMARE.

My biggest success so far has been going halberd, and making him "waste" his chrono, since he'll be disarmed for a portion of it. That still doesn't prevent him from Chronoing for his team to take advantage of it.

Any advice would be great!

This is ~Ancient MMR.

Why doesn't Silver Edge break AM's Aghs Spell Reflect?

Posted: 24 Jan 2018 11:25 PM PST

It is supposed to break all passives right? Would that be imbalanced if It disabled his Aghs upgrade?

Something just "clicked" about how people learn things about the game

Posted: 24 Jan 2018 07:26 PM PST

Just now I was playing a pub and my team was the following from 1~5[Void, Razor(me), Omni, Zeus, Lion] vs [Anti-Mage, Death Prophet, Sand King, Pudge, Shadow Shaman]

As usual Razor is pretty disgusting to play against so I roflDumpstered the opponent Death Prophet my Void got free farm and Omni too.

To my amusement my Void of course took his free farm and went Battlefury + Mjollnir(this ain't a joke.) I decided that after we won the stomp I would say to him "Hey bro those two itens you went are just not good together, you either go Bfury or Maelstrom", my teammates also said to him that this was a shit item build.

His reply did not shock me one bit because I both witnessed and played part in these kind of situations before, he's response was "I built these itens thinking about the late game(against AM xD) but you're free to think whatever you want, my build is correct."

After the ancient exploded something just clicked on how players learn things in this game, I think people just need to lose a lot solely based on their mistakes until they figure it out(which is quite ineffective) or get flammed into submission 50 games in a row until they realize they are the ones fucking up the game.

Of course this doesn't apply to everybody, but for the majority of players it does. I came across of people who were happy to take advice but I come across with a whole lot more of players like Void who were so egotistical and narrow-minded that they just fuck one game after another.

tl;dr -> Most players learn this game by trial and error because of how people(everyone including me) have this inflated ego effect when they enter a virtual environment with strangers.
