/r/Games E3 2018 Plans + Megathread Volunteer Recruitment

Posted: 12 Mar 2018 05:49 AM PDT

Hey everyone!

E3 2018 is just over a month away now, and as you know, that'll be when the sub's activity will be at its peak with a flood of news, reveals, and conference coverage. We're posting this well in advance to make sure that you all know the plans for this June, as well as to recruit as many volunteers as we can to help with the workload.

Last year, the mod team came up with a system for how to deal with all the chaos. Everyone responded quite well to it, so that's how we'll structure things going forward!

Plans for E3 2018 on /r/Games

  • We'll have two stickies up each day: one for each major company conference (Microsoft, Bethesda, Nintendo, etc) with the suggested sort set to new for everyone to chat in with their reactions, and an accompanying Live Thread that will be locked.

  • Moderators will handle the major company megathreads and update them with links to individual game megathreads throughout each conference. We'll experiment with post-show discussion threads this year.

  • Moderators will also handle Live Threads, along with anyone who volunteers to help us out.

  • Individual game announcements during conferences will have their own unstickied megathread posts with the [E3 2018] tag. For major game announcements, these must be self-posts with helpful information about the game, such as the developer/publisher, genre, and a link to the trailer.

  • Anyone is free to submit these individual megathreads, but you'll need to be fast and post them in real-time during the company conferences as soon as they're revealed. You're allowed to simply post with the appropriate tag and title to get the jump on everyone else and fill out the rest of the info later (within reason). Any duplicates will be removed.

  • Submissions about indie games can just be links to their respective trailers, but they still need to have [E3 2018] in their titles. It would be great if these also had self-posts. Not mandatory at all.

  • To cut down on clutter, any and all discussion about game reveals will be funneled into these megathreads. Any news from media outlets will also be redirected into these threads for each OP to edit into their post throughout the day of the relevant conference.

  • Mutliplatform games with information spread throughout other conferences can have multiple megathreads with the [E3 2018] tag.

  • You're free to submit news about upcoming announcements or legitimate rumors from the media, but these also must have the [E3 2018] tag.

  • Overnight, we'll sticky an [E3 2018] "Day X Discussion" post for everyone to chat in and unwind from the day.

  • Also overnight, we'll keep up the comprehensive Thread Archive. This will include links to all the major reveals from the expo up until that point, along with the E3 schedule, all in one place for you to catch up on in case you missed the reveals in real-time.

Any submissions about E3 without the [E3 2018] tag will be removed, but there are exceptions

  • Starting the day after a game's relevant company conference, you can submit your own regular posts about it without the tag.

  • News about games revealed the previous day(s) don't need the tag, but it would be helpful to include.

We're recruiting volunteers to help us out!

  • You'll give us a hand with posting game megathreads and updating the Live Threads!

  • If you only want to post megathreads and not help with the Live Threads, or vice-versa, that's fine!

  • Edit: our volunteers so far have called dibs on the most anticipated games like Death Stranding, The Last of Us Part II, etc. We're now primarily looking for volunteers for more general E3 coverage. If you'd like to cover Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, Bethesda, Ubisoft, or any other company with a major conference, please let us know!

  • You'll coordinate with the mod team in a special backroom channel on the /r/Games Discord server. In case anyone isn't familiar with Discord, this is a text only channel, not voice chat! So please don't be shy.

  • If you're not too handy with Reddit's formatting for the self-posts, don't worry! We'll provide the template. All you'll have to do is copy/paste and fill in the relevant info.

  • All helpers will get their own flair here on the sub that reads "E3 2018 Volunteer". You'll get to keep this forever even if all you do is maintain a single game megathread.

  • You won't be in charge of posting the major conference megathreads. We had an issue last year where we didn't want to sticky these in case a volunteer went rogue and abused the visibility of their stickied post. This is also to help make sure you guys don't get burned out while handling the sheer workload that comes with keeping the major megathreads updated.

  • Big thanks to /u/Ainsyyy, /u/no1dead, and /u/DrSeafood for helping us out last year!

If you want to give us a hand, or if you have any questions, then feel free to comment below, ping one of us on Discord, or send us a modmail!

Reviews

Destructoid - Chris Carter - 8 / 10.0

I'm still tooling around in skirmishes in BattleTech, and it's done its part in getting me interested in the bigger picture. Harebrained Schemes should be proud, as it's mostly done right by the various tabletop licenses it's worked with for the past five years or so.

Eurogamer - Richie Shoemaker - Recommended

A compelling fusion of tabletop manoeuvring and characterful campaign progression

GameGrin - Simon Brown - 10 / 10.0

An unmissable strategy gem that will unquestionably keep you playing one more contract. If you like mechs or tactical strategy games you'll have a great time here whether you are a newcomer to the universe or not. BattleTech gets my full recommendation.

GameSkinny - Ty Arthur - 8 / 10 stars

Harebrained Schemes finally gives fans a faithful recreation of the tabletop mech combat series!

GameWatcher - Chris Capel - 9 / 10.0

Battletech is an addictive strategy game that smushes everything we love into one game, and dares us not to love it. It combines Firefly, Game of Thrones, Star Wars, XCOM, and giant Mechs punching each other and shooting laser beams.

GamingBolt - Ravi Sinha - 8 / 10.0

BattleTech doesn't just make mechs cool - it turns them into larger than war machines with grand tales of heroism and treachery. It's mechanically sound, dense with story and lore and well realized despite some imperfections.

GamingTrend - Ron Burke - 95 / 100

Harebrained Schemes has transformed the complexity of the pen and paper BattleTech universe into an incredible game that welcomes veteran and rookie pilots alike. BattleTech represents the perfect culmination of all of their previous works, and the team should be proud of how well it all came together.

MMOGames - Chris Hughes - 8 / 10.0

It's a tough life out there in the Periphery. It'd be nice if mission difficulty had a more easy gradient but for a game series that has been gone for so long, I'm just happy that it's not only returned, but returned in the best shape it's been in a while.

Old Man Mordaith - Joshua Smith - 9 / 10.0

Mechwarriors and the Battlemechs are separate beasts. You can swap them around, one can get messed up pretty bad and the other survive an engagement without a scratch. You need to watch everything. Facing, elevation, turn order, sensor range, and way more information that I could elegantly lay out in this review. Rest assured it is a tactical players dream come true.

PC Gamer - Chris Thursten - 85 / 100

A deep tactical wargame with strong fundamentals supporting a broadly successful campaign system.

PCGamesN - Julian Benson - 9 / 10

This is where BattleTech shines, it's not about completing missions on your best day, it's about playing as best you can on your worst.

Rock, Paper, Shotgun - Alec Meer - No Verdict

There is something great glinting just below BattleTech's dour and crusty surface. So much now depends on whether future updates will dig for it or not – I pray they do.

Saving Content - Scott Ellison II - 5 / 5 stars

BATTLETECH is a massive game. There are several dozens of hours in the campaign to enjoy, and when the main story is complete, you're able to continue and work the Inner Sphere to increase your reputation and expand your ragtag group of MechWarriors. Skirmish mode helps extend your gametime against AI, or against a friend. Harebrained Schemes ushers in a new style of tactical combat for all skill level of players to enjoy. It is as rewarding as it is deep. BATTLETECH is complex, immersive, and most of all, a tactician's dream.

Sirus Gaming - John Matthew Fernandez - 8.8 / 10.0

Let us have a quick recap. You run a mercenary company, and you need money to run it properly. To get the money, you have to do combat missions with Mechs. These missions are hazardous and could mean losing money from dead pilots and destroyed Mech. Honestly, BattleTech is a harder game overall and I love it. The challenge in XCOM was dealing with limited resources, time and RNG. BattleTech is dealing with accounting and RNG.

TechRaptor - Adam Potts - 9 / 10.0

Fans of the tabletop games will find much to love, as will turn-based strategy players. Previous players of the MechWarrior videos games will find everything gladly familiar in this edition and anyone willing to give this title a try, will find an immersive, rewarding strategy experience that offers a great insight into setting. The gameplay is tactically challenging and the story campaign is well produced and very in keeping with the franchise.

The Games Machine - Daniele Dolce - Italian - 7.5 / 10.0

BATTLETECH is a good and a bad game at the same time. A great storyline and a deep tactical approach in the main missions don't succeed in concealing poor side quests and too many techincal issues. You should wait for a couple of patches at least, before considering to spend your money here.

TheSixthAxis - Stefan L - 7 / 10

Though it's rough around the edges, has difficulty spikes and very much feels like the foundations on which Harebrained can build upon, the core turn-based tactical gameplay of BattleTech is great.

USgamer - Mike Williams - No Verdict

Currently, it's not my favorite tactical strategy experience, but I admit I enjoy seeing my BattleMechs tromping across the landscape to stomp out a fallen foe.
