[Plea] Stop Buying Pokecoins if you don't like EX Raids

Posted: 30 Jan 2018 07:40 AM PST

Expect to get downvoted, but I see at least 3-4 threads a day stating that someone raids 15x a day at a sponsored gym and doesn't get an EX raid pass, but then they proceed to bash the casual low level players that get them on their free pass.

The solution I see is to vote with your wallet. Don't buy Poke coins.. Don't buy 15 raid passes a day! Niantic won't change a system if people are still throwing their money at it.

Become casual and just raid once a day with your free pass. This sends a stronger message than posting how much money you've spent on the game - Niantic seeing revenue going down will alert them that EX raids are driving away dedicated players.

Shiny Check...list! ✔️ Which ones do you want?

‘Twas the night before Mewtwo

Posted: 30 Jan 2018 05:41 PM PST

Twas the night before Mewtwo, when all through the chats No one was still talking about Pikachu hats

Their phones were all plugged in, no cables were loose They didn't want to risk running out of juice

Revive all their creatures, health back to full A Boss fight is coming, it will not be dull

But first at the gym, we will see who still has — Red Blue or Yellow — the most Golden Razz

Then who should appear, at the top of the gym We knew he was coming, it's Mewtwo! It's him!

The crowd falls into a hush that won't last Because — oh curses — he has Focus Blast!

With strength in numbers, we fight together Fingers numb from the cold winter weather

Soon it is done, Mewtwo had a big fall Time to catch him in our own Poké ball!

May luck be with you, your curve balls fly true That soon you might have your own new Mewtwo!

[Complaint] Why has distance/buddy/egg tracking not been improved after 1.5 years?

Posted: 30 Jan 2018 09:59 AM PST

I am a casual player - FTP and most of my time spent playing is when I run. It just makes it more enjoyable and can gamify my exercise slightly. I ran 3.2 miles today at around an 8 minute mile pace - nothing crazy, but certainly not walking speed.

I received .7km total distance for the run (I know this as I incubated an egg at the start of the run).

That is HORRIBLE. I should be getting 5km for that. Even in a worse case scenario, I would think I'd get half of that. But to get 14% of the distance travelled - that is a JOKE.

In the spirit of being constructive, I'm wondering how and why this has this not been improved after a year and a half? Is Ingress this bad with tracking? Why hasn't POGO partnered with a great tracking app like Google Maps (or things like Apple Fitness (and the Android equivalent)) to improve this. As someone who likes this game and seems to embrace the "Go" part of it the most, I would really like to see this as a focus for improvement.

EDIT - Something else I should have been clear about is that even when I do walk, my buddy distance is not accurate. This could be anecdotal, but it just simply does not track my actual distance walked versus what I earn in the game.

[Story] Solo Tier 3 Raids Guide | Free To Play Level 33 | No Weather Boost | No Legendaries | No Regionals | No Stacked Teams | No Revives

Posted: 30 Jan 2018 05:57 PM PST

About This Guide

  • Are you tired of hearing "Just get 6 100% IV lvl 40 Tyranitars, they are soooo easy to get from raids"? (I have always kept an eye out for Tyranitar raids, and have only ever done 3 and 1 escaped)
  • Are you rural and don't have any/many legendaries or somehow missed out on some legendaries? (I have caught 1 or 2 of each of the birds and around 5 of each of the beasts and weather duo, and no EX Raid pass. And I don't have enough rare candy to get them all up to lvl 30+)
  • Do you dislike having a team stacked full of the same Pokemon and/or prefer a variety of Pokemon?
  • Do you have limited stardust and candy and want to maximise your resource usage on different Pokemon?
  • Can you not afford to travel the world to get all the regionals?
  • Are you a F2P player that hasn't invested 18 hours a day to PoGo?
  • Are you sick of hearing people saying to get Pokemon with legacy moves, like Rock Throw on Omastar?

If you answered yes to any of these questions then this is the guide for you. This guide will attempt to solo as many tier 3 raids as possible for a semi-casual Level 33 F2P player without legendaries, regionals and not using multiple of the same Pokemon in the one raid. I am trying to be as inclusive as possible with this guide and not exclude anyone with Pokemon they cannot get.

Raid Bosses

Let's start off with weaknesses to try and find some overlaps

Raid Boss Att Def HP Weaknesses
Alakazam 208 152 3000 Bug, Dark, Ghost
Cloyster* 134 226 1800 Fighting, Rock, Grass, Electric
Gengar 201 124 3000 Dark, Ghost, Ground, Psychic
Machamp 181 129 3000 Fairy, Flying, Psychic
Ninetails^ 134 159 3000 Ground, Rock, Water
Omastar 162 176 3000 Grass*2, Fighting, Ground, Electric
Porygon 122 112 3000 Fighting
Scyther 170 135 3000 Rock*2, Flying, Fire, Electric, Ice

* Is Tier 2 but still difficult to solo because of the extremely high defense stat - twice that of Porygon. I consider it a honorary Tier 3 raid

^ Ninetails is impossible for this guide as you either need legendaries, stacked teams, and/or weather boost

Super Effective Types

Now let's break down each type:

3 out of 7 raids

  • Electric - Unfortunately the best electric Pokemon are legendaries, and I am not going to count Ampharos as I have only just walked my Mareep far enough to evolve it, let alone level it up. Gen 3 brought nothing viable, and Gen 4 sees the introduction of the evolutions of Magneton and Electabuzz, but that is still a fair way off. The only option left is Jolteon.
  • Fighting - Gen 3 introduced some new glass cannon options in Blaziken, Breloom, and a tankier option Hariyama but Machamp is still the best all rounder.

2 out of 7 raids

  • Dark - The best non-legendary option by far for all 7 generations is Tyranitar. You should have at least 1 maxed out Tyranitar.
  • Flying - Most Pokemon that are flying have it as a secondary type and don't have a flying quick move. I will be ignoring flying for this guide.
  • Ghost - Gengar has one of the highest attack stats for the ghost type, even for all 7 generations. However he isn't very tanky and suffers from the poison typing making him weak to Psychic.
  • Grass - Grass is double super effective against Omastar. The best option at the moment is Exeguttor, but other viable options are Victreebel, Vileplume and Venusaur. Gen 3 brought some more options like Sceptile or the glass canon Breloom.
  • Ground - Ground suffers from a bad move pool. In saying that Rhydon is the best to invest into as it also has another evolution in Gen 4. The raids that have a weakness to Ground have other weaknesses with stronger options, so Ground will be ignored.
  • Psychic - Psychic has a good move pool and a number of excellent attackers to choose from. Mewtwo is the obvious choice if you are lucky enough. Without using legendaries then Alakazam, Espeon, and Exeggutor are great choices. I am not going to count Gardevoir as Ralts is pretty rare.
  • Rock - Rock is double super effective against Scyther. Unfortunately the only fast move at the moment is Rock Throw, and the only good enough Pokemon that can learn it is Golem.

1 out of 7 raids

  • Bug - There aren't the best bug options at the moment, but I needed a Pinsir to be able to beat Alakazam.
  • Fairy - Fairy is only strong against Machamp for which there are plenty of Psychic Pokemon to be able to beat him.
  • Ice - There only option at the moment is Jynx but she has low survivability. Gen 4 brings some more options like Glaceon, Weavile and the best non-legendary ice attacker for all 7 generations Mamoswine
  • Fire - Blaziken and Flareon are excellent options here having a higher attack stat than Entei and the nerfed Ho-Oh and almost matching Moltres. Use one if you already have a high powered one, but it is not needed.

Generalists

  • Generalists - There is a reason these guys are called Pseudo-Legendaries. Even without the 1.4 times damage for type effectiveness, these guys still outclass many other Pokemon. Dragonite and Tyranitar are our friends in this challenge and they are always excellent choices to invest in. I will also give a shout out here to Metagross in Gen 3 who along with Tyranitar are the only Pseudo-Legendaries that are not dragon. Tyranitar has a few weaknesses (so can't always be used) but is super effective against Gengar and Alakazam.

My Team

This is my team of 13 Pokemon to beat the raids. As you can see only half of them are above 90% IV. Level and moves are more important than IVs. When I first started I powered up everything to max level, but later on when I was low on stardust I got smarter and used tools to determine chances of winning and breakpoints (see the Tools section at the end).

Dodged 1/9 strong attacks

Pokebattler says 80% chance to win

Tusks Raid Team Builder v1.1.0 says Median Time to Win is 156.75s and that Jolteon shouldn't be needed.

Machamp is fairly easy because of the weakness to Psychic and there being plently of great Psychic attackers.

Pokemon Level CP Att Def HP Fast Move Charge Move Status
Alakazam 34.5 2660 15 15 15 Confusion Future Sight
Espeon 34.5 2672 9 10 15 Confusion Future Sight

Pokebattler says 100% chance to win

Tusks Raid Team Builder v1.1.0 says Median Time to Win is 138s and that Dragonite shouldn't be needed.

Gengar should be easy after completing Machamp mainly using all the same Psychic attackers.

Pokemon Level CP Att Def HP Fast Move Charge Move Status
Tyranitar 34.5 3369 14 15 15 Bite Crunch
Alakazam 34.5 2660 15 15 15 Confusion Future Sight

Tusks Raid Team Builder v1.2.0 says Median Time to Win is 170.75s and that Alakazam shouldn't be needed

Golem is the key here with rock being double super effective. I managed to remove around 1/3 of Scyther's health with just Golem.

Golem 31 2471 10 15 13 Rock Throw Rock Blast
Dragonite 34.5 3238 15 7 15 Dragon Tail Outrage

Pokebattler says 83.3% chance to win

Tusks Raid Team Builder v1.2.0 says Median Time to Win is 159.33s and that Machamp, Dragonite and Tyranitar is should be all that is needed.

Porygon is considered the easiest because of it's very low stats. It only has a weakness to Fighting, but he is so weak it doesn't really matter. I should have been able to beat Porygon with just Machamp and Dragonite, but I didn't dodge the Hyper Beams at first, and it one shotted my Machamp and Dragonite.

Pokemon Level CP Att Def HP Fast Move Charge Move Status
Machamp 28 2256 11 15 12 Counter Dynamic Punch
Dragonite 34.5 3238 15 7 15 Dragon Tail Outrage

Dodged 3/11 strong attacks

Pokebattler says 60% chance to win

Tusks Raid Team Builder v1.2.0 says Median Time to Win is 171.27s and that Golem should not be needed

Cloyster being a tier 2 raid has 60% of the health of the other raids in this guide, but it has a 60% higher defence stat than the average defence of all the tier 3 raids. This makes it a challenge to solo.

Pokemon Level CP Att Def HP Fast Move Charge Move Status
Exeggutor 34.5 2674 15 15 13 Bullet Seed Solar Beam
Machamp 31.5 2478 11 15 12 Counter Dynamic Punch

Omastar - Water Gun/Hydro Pump

2017-11-29 11:31 - Weather: N/A

Start Timer 176s to End Timer 6s

Dodged 3/10 strong attacks

Pokebattler says 60% chance to win

Tusks Raid Team Builder v1.2.0 says Median Time to Win is 172.28s and that Dragonite and Gengar shouldn't be needed.

Omastar has the highest defence stat of all Tier 3 raids, but the key soloing is taking advantage of it's double weakness to grass. This can be taken advantage of even more if the weather is clear. I had to retry Omastar a second time to make sure I dodged enough with Exeggutor and Venusaur to both get off 3 Solar Beams.

Pokemon Level CP Att Def HP Fast Move Charge Move Status
Exeggutor 34.5 2674 15 15 13 Bullet Seed Solar Beam
Venusaur 30 2129 13 15 8 Vine Whip Solar Beam
Machamp 31.5 2478 11 15 12 Counter Dynamic Punch
Jolteon 31 2316 13 10 13 Thunder Shock Discharge
Dragonite 34.5 3238 15 7 15 Dragon Tail Outrage Only partly used
Gengar 34.5 2399 15 13 15 Hex Shadow Ball Not used

Alakazam - Psycho Cut/Focus Blast

2018-01-09 14:46 - Weather: Clear (didn't affect anything)

Start Timer 176s to End Timer 4s

Dodged 4/9 strong attacks

Pokebattler says 58% chance to win

Tusks Raid Team Builder v1.2.0 says Median Time to Win is 167.77s and that Dragonite and Exeggutor should not be needed

Alakazam is considered one of the hardest Tier 3 raids as it has a strong defence stat and the highest attack stat. Also it's weaknesses include Ghost, which Gengar has poison so is weak to Psychic, and Bug which doesn't really have the best options at the moment. I had taken a hiatus after the initial release of Gen 3 and had reached level 35 by the time I was attempting Alakazam, and so could power up my Tyranitar. I chose Exeggutor as the 6th as it shouldn't be needed, but had the weather boost.

Pokemon Level CP Att Def HP Fast Move Charge Move Status
Tyranitar 37 3499 14 15 15 Bite Crunch
Gengar 34.5 2399 15 13 15 Hex Shadow Ball
Pinsir 34 2490 14 11 14 Bug Bite X-Scissor
Banette 31.5 1800 13 15 14 Shadow Claw Shadow Ball
Dragonite 34.5 3238 15 7 15 Dragon Tail Outrage Had a sliver of health left
Exeggutor 34.5 2674 15 15 13 Bullet Seed Solar Beam Not used

Impossible Raids

Ninetails

Ninetails has the highest tier 3 defence stat without a double weakness. Also it's weaknesses doesn't have a lot of options. Ground has a bad move pool, rock only has one fast move which can only be learned by Golem, and Gyarados is the only water option with enough DPS. I am setting up the following team with Legendaries which according to Pokebattler should be able to beat Ninetails in either Clear or Rainy weather.

Pokemon Level CP Att Def HP Fast Move Charge Move
Groudon 30 3468 13 15 15 Mud Shot Earthquake
Kyogre 34 3658 14 14 10 Waterfall Hydro Pump
Gyarados 34.5 2989 14 15 12 Waterfall Hydro Pump
Golem 31 2471 10 15 13 Rock Throw Rock Blast
Rhydon 30 2797 15 12 13 Mud-Slap Earthquake
Dragonite 34.5 3238 15 7 15 Dragon Tail Outrage

Tools

Using these tools I was able to confidently attempt a raid and always succeeded on my first or second try.

Revive Drought will cost you money Ninantic.

Posted: 30 Jan 2018 04:56 PM PST

I know you are tempted to think "Oh we sell Max Revives" in store....

But that's not what I am seeing happening. I am seeing people not raid. People aren't doing 6-7-8 man Kygores because they dont want to lose 8 pokemon and lose revives.

Instead they are doing fewer raids of larger numbers. We are doing 18 people Kyogres instead of two 9 people ones.

I suspect if you take a look at your Kyogre data from the last week, you will see a drop off in raids = less money for you.

Edit: My example above didn't fill out the story enough. My bad. It's not just the lack of splitting at a raid. 18 either is exactly same 18 passes.

What I mean is that attitude against smaller raids, is hitting up through discord. In past, I would see someone speak up, once it hit 3 or so toons, then getting 5 more toons to to 9 happened often. In my local channel I'd see about 8 to 10 raids a day.

Now, because 3 doesn't come close to that "Critical Mass" people want before committing to coming. I am seeing at most 1-2 raids hit like 9. Then magically everyone doesn't want to miss the 1-2 big raids, and comes out of the woodwork.

As a total, 8-10 raids of 6-10. Would say be 72 Passes on average (I split the numbers). Now, Im seeing 1-2 big raids. of 18. Say 27 Passes on average.

[idea] If you're going to keep EX raids, Mewtwo needs a buff

Posted: 30 Jan 2018 01:10 PM PST

He should be MEWTWO, destroyer of worlds, not purple Alakazam, only if Alakazam were a little nervous around girls and never left the house.

Look, Niantic has made it next to impossible for a lot of people to get him through the Ex Raid system, so the payoff should be HUGE. I finally got mine, dumped tons of rare candy into it, leveled it all the way to max, and it's...just...meh.

Never finds his way in to my suggested team for raids, what gives Niantic? Did you really intend him to be dex filler?

There should be screaming guitar solos and flame cannons every time he appears. There should be special animation of all other pokemon cowering in fear. Explosions that he walks away from without looking.

Do the right thing, Niantic.

13 and 15 trainers joined each raid respectively and I was the only person physically there. I don't know whether I should be glad I at least got to catch one of the two because of those spoofers or if I should be discouraged because they get to raid multiple times every day from work or home. Oh, well. At least I got the dex entry.

Why is Gyarados such a popular gym defender?

Posted: 30 Jan 2018 10:32 AM PST

This is something I've never gotten. Why is Gyarados so common in gyms? Yeah, he's an amazing attacker but, as a defender, I feel he leaves a lot to be desired. That double weakness to Electric is devastating. I have Raikou and even high CP Gyarados are a breeze to take down. Even if you don't have Raikou, everyone who plays this game on a regular basis has a good Jolteon which gets the job done without much trouble, too. Even with his new fast move of Waterfall, I think Vaporeon is much more worthwhile as a defender. It takes a lot longer to take down a Vaporeon than it does for Gyarados. The only downside is Water Gun, but I'd much rather take a bulkier defender without such a detrimental weakness over a stronger move. Is there something I'm missing here?

[Humor] Yup - the struggle is real.

Posted: 30 Jan 2018 03:52 AM PST

What move sets do you enjoy that aren't considered META?

Posted: 30 Jan 2018 11:56 AM PST

For example, my Raikou has volt switch/thunderbolt (I want wild charge but TMs are hard to get). I understand thundershock is better for getting energy for a charge move, but I happen to really enjoy how hard volt switch hits while taking out gyms.

I complained about the ex-raid system three weeks ago and this is the reply. I’ve since gotten two ex-raid passes since then from gyms where I am bronze

Gary (Pokémon GO) Jan 9, 6:23 PM IST

Hello Trainer,

Thank you for writing back in!

Honestly, you have all the rights to report your complaints to us and I can relate to the disappointment for not receiving the EX Raid pass. However, I will not be able to comment on our EX Raid invitation system as we support team do not have any influence on it. I've taken this as a report and forwarded it to the respective team.

We collect and share the information you provide about your experiences with our team to continue improving Pokémon GO. Please keep let us know if you notice anything else that doesn't seem right. Your feedback is greatly appreciated!

Meanwhile, I encourage you not to lose hope and continue doing raid battle at Gyms found in parks and sponsored locations. If you meet the new criteria you will receive the opportunity to earn an EX Raid invitation.

I wish you good luck and hope you receive one soon!

If I have a 100 IV Pokemon with low CP is it better to level it up then evolve or evolve first then level up.

Posted: 30 Jan 2018 08:53 PM PST

Pretty much what the title says. I have a high IV Pokemon with low CO so should I level up then evolve or evolve First? I just want to know what is best in order to maximize my Pokemon.

Ex raid pass for a renamed gym?

Posted: 30 Jan 2018 08:12 PM PST

Okay we have ourselves a bit of a situation here. There's an ex raid pass that has been distributed that is different than the other passes also given to that same gym. The directions both lead to the same place, the gym has the same picture, but the gym was renamed over the summer. Al the passes except one have the new name, while one has the old name. The person who got that pass claims that they have not raided there since the summer (when the gym name was changed), but obviously I can't prove whether that's true or not because I am not that person. Has anyone heard of this being possible? Will it affect their chance of being able to participate? I guess the only true way to find out is to wait and see
