When I heard about Golf Courses for Scotland..

Posted: 24 Jan 2018 08:29 AM PST

Firstly, let me say I'm actually really stoked about Scotland in Civ 6. They sound like a fun and unique civilization that will actually be interesting to play.

I was kind of like "huh?" on golf courses, but then I remembered Robin Williams describing how there is nothing more Scottish than golf...

For me the most exciting thing about Scotland... is getting to hear Atomic era Scotland the Brave.

Posted: 24 Jan 2018 01:31 PM PST

with the announcement of Scotland there are now as many Civs from the British Isles as there are from Sub-Saharan Africa.

Posted: 24 Jan 2018 01:52 PM PST

I probably shouldn't be, but I'm more than a little disappointed by that.

Speculation on future DLC Civs (Because that hasn't been done before)

Posted: 24 Jan 2018 09:09 AM PST

Hey guys! Now that we know about all the civs that will be included in Rise and Fall, I thought I'd do some pontificating about the ones I'd like to see in future DLCs... Because, you know, no one has done that yet.

I was diagramming all the released civs so far into types, to see where there are holes in gameplay, so that I'd be able to come up with ones that would have unique play-styles. The types I came up with were Culture (China, Athens, America, Kongo, and Egypt), Diplomacy (France, Cree), Economy (England, Netherlands), Science (Korea, Scotland), Production (Germany, Noob-ia), Religion (Gandhi's India, Poland, Khmer, Arabia, Spain), Naval (Indonesia, Norway), War (Mongolia, Zulu, Macedon, Sparta, Chandy's India, Aztec, Scythia), and Versatile (Persia, Japan, Brazil, Russia, Rome). Obviously, many of them can work for different categories, but this is how I see them. So I see holes in Science, Production, Naval, Economic, and Diplomatic play-styles.

I also took into account holes in the TLC maps. Europe will be completely ignored in this.

African Civs The most underrepresented area in the game imo. Africa has the richest human history of any area on the planet, because humans have lived there longer than they have lived anywhere else.

Ethiopia- the cradle of humanity, people have lived in Ethiopia longer than anywhere else. As such, there are leaders to choose from any era. I have seen suggestions for Zara Yaqob and Haile Selassie (Ras Tafari), but if Firaxis wanted to go into a new direction for Ethiopia, I'd suggest Menelik II, the founder of modern Ethiopia. He kicked out the Italian occupiers and helped reform Ethiopia's government, infrastructure, and technology, as well as abolishing the slave trade. Under him, they would have a culture and production focus.

Mali- Led by Mansa Musa, of course. As the richest MF'er who ever lived, this civ would be able to accumulate gold better than anyone else in the game with a unique Commercial Hub. Musa was famed for his pilgrimage to the Levant, where his wealth was on display for all to see. Ironically, he spent so much gold on the way that it crippled the economies of the places he visited. Maybe he could have a unique Trader who could steal gold from other civs.

Swahili- Not a unified empire in the proper sense, but a collection of city-states that shared a culture. This hasn't stopped Pericles or Tomyris from being in the game, so I see no reason not to include these guys. They'd obviously have a focus on Economy, Navy, and to a lesser extent Diplomacy.

Morocco- a fan favorite from Civ V, I would see them being similar to their counterparts in that game.

American Civs As an American and a student of pre-Colombian history, obviously I want more native civs in this game.

Navajo- The one I want the most. Fearsome warriors on horseback and with a unique and beautiful religious and cultural outlook, the Navajo would be able to wage war effectively against warmongers on their continent or with whom they share borders. They also would be able to rack up lots of faith and be able to work the desert with a unique Pueblo improvement. (As an aside, what I would really love to see is a united Puebloan civ under Po'Pay, maybe with the ability to levy CS with faith; but we all know that's not going to happen.)

Inca- Duh. They would introduce a brand new mechanic to the game--the ability to work mountains! Also, their DLC should come with the Machu Picchu wonder, which can only be built on a mountain. Another fan-favorite that shouldn't be left out of the game.

Maya- Also duh. They should be able to rack up early science with the best of them with the Long Count!

Inuit- To give Russia a rival for those sweet, sweet Tundra tiles. I could see them also being able to work the Snow, which no one else can do. Maybe a unique fishery that has to be adjacent to snow/tundra?

Gran Colombia- We need a proper modern Latin American civ. Simon Bolivar fits the bill of what a Civ leader should be. Probably would have a Diplomatic focus. (Aside: Did you know that there is a city in Missouri called Bolivar, and they pronounce it "Bolliver?" And they have a picture of Simon hanging in the courthouse. What's up with that?)

Cherokee/Choctaw/another Mississipian culture-They haven't been represented in any Civ game up to this point, despite having a huge cultural area of influence. This game needs more mounds in it. I could see them being a good all-around civ with a diplomacy and production focus.

Haiti Toussaint Louverture, like Bolivar, fits exactly what I think of when I think of a civ leader. Haiti was the first free Black nation in the western hemisphere, and Louverture made Napoleon piss himself in fear. The Caribbean is not represented at all in the game yet.

Polynesian Civs Completely ignored in the base game. It would be tough to make them seem really different from Indonesia without sucking, but they need to be represented in the game.

Hawai'i- Let's get a proper Hawai'ian civ for Kamehameha to lead! Another one that could have interesting diplomatic abilities, reflecting Hawai'i's emergence as a global player in the 1700s.

Maori-Gives Curtin a rival on TSL maps. Maybe a unique unit that can be effective on land AND sea? No one's done that yet.

Tonga- perhaps an amenities-focused naval military playstyle? Like a combination of the Aztec and Norwegian game mechanics.

Anyway, thanks for reading all of that, if you did!

[TL/DR this game needs MOAR CIVZ and I have had way too much coffee today.]

A timeline of Civ V and VI leaders

Posted: 24 Jan 2018 06:56 AM PST

Once upon a time, a user named /u/Laxley made a post here that I wanted to expand to Civ 6.

This timeline gives you a really good understanding of just how seriously old human civilization actually is. =)

Check it out here!

Fun notes I learned while making this:

Gilgamesh was probably a real person. He's listed on numerous old stone tablets that have all the names of sumerian kings and the years they ruled. AFAIK it was all city-states tho with kings in charge of a single city.
Pericles probably knew about Gorgo in his current events. He was 15 when Leonidas was in power in Sparta. That makes them the only two civ leaders from the same general civilization at the same time IIRC.
Jadwiga actually retained a good amount of power even though she married Poland into Poland-Lithuania while super young. She died in childbirth which is a shame, she would have had a massively successful life. The biggest tragedy for Civ leaders that I can recall.
and finally: The 1600s were apparently boring worldwide.

Why no casus belli against warmongering neighbour, that's attacking my city state?

Posted: 24 Jan 2018 08:42 AM PST

Why for the love of god do I have no casus belli against warmongering neighbour, that's attacking my city state?

Fucking Japan has been harassing me since day one. They hate me for having a strong military but no faith or culture. I don't have faith and culture because I have to have a big army because I have fucking Japan as a neighbour. He also destroyed Germany. He denounces me and declares war however he likes, he is trying to destroy my city state that is my ally. I can not declare war in any case other than to get an egreious warmongerer penalty.

Wh..what?
