Professions as a focus in RPGs Posted: 24 Jul 2018 09:31 PM PDT At this point its a fairly standard feature of most RPGs to have crafting/professions of some kind. Both MMOs like WoW and single player games like Skyrim have very similar systems. Usually there is herbalism/alchemy for useful potions, enchanting for enhancing weapons, leather working and smithing for armour, etc. Resource nodes can be found scattered around the game world, or obtained from certain enemies. In most cases - in all within my own admittedly limited experience - professions are a minor part of the game, rarely having the complexity or variety that combat related systems do. You can often get a benefit from using professions, for example by enchanting a weapon or armour, but that benefit is often minor. That is how professions are often implemented, as a way to get a slight boost in one area, rather than as a seperate play style or focus. WoW is a good example of this. Leaning alchemy can give you a slight edge by always having potion buffs, smithing lets you enhance your weapons. This makes sense in a MMO, but it is often also the case in single player games. But does this needed to be the case? Could you have a RPG, somewhat in the vein of Skyrim, where is is possible to play as a primarily blacksmith, or a gem cutter, with combat being a secondary specialisation? And would there be any interest in such a game? There are certainly many people that enjoy crafting/professions in games, but the lack of any real focus on these elements suggests that these people are relatively few. I think it could be done, although the game would have to be structured around that option, something that doesn't seem to hard. At least, I've got a few ideas, some of which might work. The most important thing would be to flesh out professions. Simply levelling up a skill, and unlocking recipes is fine for a supplementary system, but would feel pretty bland after a while. Perhaps you have to travel the game world, learning from different masters of your craft. These masters might only teach you once you have completed a profession based quest line to prove your potential. You could even add in a 'fame' system, where you can become a renown smith or jeweller who NPCs will seek out and commission work from. Crafting itself could be improved a lot in most systems. Take gem cutting/jewel crafting for example. In most games you find gemstones by mining ore nodes around the world, the ore and gems then being combined in a crafting menu that differs little from the crafting menu used for alchemy or blacksmithing. But imagine having to cut each gem individually, the power of the final gem being determined by the volume, number of facets, or its geometrical precision. In such a system player skill would be as important as the abstract crafting 'level' used for progression, much as is the case in combat. Alchemy might require you to venture into wilderness areas of the game world largely devoid of targets for other more combat oriented gameplay, but which requires your character to have trained in survival skills. And you might have to hire NPC hunters to bring you rare alchemical ingredients that require hunting down specific animals. If you sell your potions in a capital city there might be a demand for potions that ward away disease, or grant a aura of beauty, while those living in remote areas would have different demands. Enchanting is usually a matter of somehow learning spells, then disenchanting items to get materials, and then enchanting far more items than you can use in order to level up the skill. But what if the enchantments were in the form of skill trees, where you could choose to specialise in fire enchantments, or arcane. Instead of disenchanting items for materials, you might study them in order to gain levels in a specific school of enchantment. Learning higher level enchants might require visiting NPCs, special locations, or completing quests specific to that profession. Perhaps a procedural system could be implemented that allows enchants to be combined in a way that produces unique effects, and increase the total number of enchants beyond the relatively few that manual creation is necessarily limited too. What do you think? Is there a way to make a game where it is possible to play as a non-combat focused character, and can crafting/professions be fleshed out enough to support this? What profession have you always wanted to see done well, and what are the best examples that you have come across? EDIT: A lot of people have been suggesting EVE Online, other MMOs people suggested were the following. EVE Online, Ultima Online, Runescape, Star Wars Galaxies, Project Gorgon, Albion Online, Wurm Online/Unlimited, Final Fantasy 14. [link] [comments] |
